Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo Medeiros ! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Chris Martin! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Matheus Silva and Edson Gomes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A telegraphed takedown attempt from Martin is defended easily by Medeiros . Medeiros chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Medeiros feints and then cracks Martin's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Martin down. Medeiros definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Medeiros lands a nice looking kick to the body. Martin takes a step back to recover. Medeiros scores with a jab to the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Martin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Medeiros as he jumps to the side. Martin drives through with a takedown into guard. Martin thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Martin working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Medeiros working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Martin. Medeiros wants to stand but Martin is controlling the position. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Martin accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Martin is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Martin stands up over Medeiros , holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Martin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Martin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Medeiros is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Martin with a flurry of punches that miss. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Martin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Medeiros 's guard. Martin scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Medeiros is trying to stand.
Martin has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Martin is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Martin prevents Medeiros from standing back up.
Martin is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Medeiros is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Chris Martin! Chris Martin is the new light heavyweight champion! Chris Martin bigged himself up after the win. The crowd seemed to love it.
