PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Leon Gutierrez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shelldor Speed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Leon Gutierrez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Shelldor Speed!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, James Atkins and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Speed misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Gutierrez shoots in looking for a takedown. Speed tries to sprawl out of it but Gutierrez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Speed manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Gutierrez stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gutierrez wants it to stay on the feet.

Gutierrez is trying to pull guard but Speed turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Gutierrez is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Speed gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Gutierrez gets control of Speed's arms and successfully pulls guard. Gutierrez will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Speed is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Gutierrez pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Speed jumps guard but Gutierrez turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Gutierrez ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Gutierrez no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Speed drops back looking for a leg! Gutierrez is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Gutierrez manages to kick Speed off! Speed jumps back into Gutierrez's guard.
Speed throws a strike but Gutierrez rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Gutierrez throws an elbow that misses. Speed uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Gutierrez's guard. Nice move by Speed!

Gutierrez pulls Speed in close to his closed guard and prevents Speed from doing any damage or advancing position.

Gutierrez seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Speed shoots in looking for a takedown but Gutierrez manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Speed's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
No luck for Gutierrez with that takedown attempt.

Gutierrez fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Speed, pushing him back against the cage.
Gutierrez tries to pull guard but Speed forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Speed tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Gutierrez smiles and moves away.
Speed misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Gutierrez.

Speed is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gutierrez sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Speed throws a head kick but Gutierrez moves out of range.
Speed is breathing heavily.

Speed rushes Gutierrez and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Gutierrez slows down the pace here.

Gutierrez is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Gutierrez lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Gutierrez takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Gutierrez is taking a breather. Speed says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gutierrez working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Gutierrez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Gutierrez seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Speed for as long as he can get away with.
Gutierrez has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Gutierrez thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Speed's head.

Gutierrez is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Speed can do to turn this around?
Speed shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Gutierrez sprawls well. Gutierrez wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Speed gets slowly back to his feet.

Speed throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gutierrez's waist but Gutierrez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Speed off to one side.
Nice takedown defense from Speed. No joy for Gutierrez on that attempt.
Gutierrez is looking to clinch but Speed is avoiding it.
Speed shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gutierrez lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Speed circles away quickly and effectively.

Shelldor Speed seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Gutierrez thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Gutierrez looking to sit in guard and control but Speed gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Well Gutierrez has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
