PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jonathan Uso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and JayDee Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Uso might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to So Close Now. The key to victory for Jonathan Uso has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jonathan Uso!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, JayDee Penn!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Penn.
We've been told by Uso's head coaches at Steel Penn/Heavy Hands Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Uso drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Jonathan Uso seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Uso feints and as Penn raises his hands in defense, Uso changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Penn is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Penn is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Uso has managed to free his arm - good work.

Penn seems to be looking for submissions.
Uso might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Uso wants to get back to his feet.
Penn sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Uso defending well though.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Penn is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Penn tries to pass the half guard into mount. Uso knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Penn throwing shots but Uso is blocking nicely.
Uso is pressing down on Penn's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Uso is pulling down on Penn's head to control his posture.
Uso's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Penn makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
My spies in The Cave Fighting Team inform me that Penn has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Penn wants to pass the guard but Uso is keeping the position.
Uso is trying to control the position but Penn postures up.

Uso has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Penn can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Penn is looking to advance position but Uso has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn is in all sorts of trouble here.
Uso fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Uso throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Penn tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Uso is in Penn's guard.
Uso is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Uso is pushing down on Penn's leg trying to pass to half guard. Penn is fighting to maintain full guard but Uso has managed to sneak the leg through.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Uso here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Ground and pound from Uso.

Penn is looking for a sweep. Uso is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Uso looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Penn with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Uso thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Penn's head.

Penn wants to get back to full guard.

Uso is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Penn moves into full guard.

Penn working for a triangle but Uso defends it easily.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Uso accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Uso slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Uso is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Penn looks calm but he's in trouble here. Uso gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Penn is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Uso lets go of the hold and Penn can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:51 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jonathan Uso!
