PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Bruce Lee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Felipe Chavez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bruce Lee!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Felipe Chavez!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A left and a right from Lee both land. Nice combination.


It looks like Felipe Chavez has been cut.
Lee throws a hook to the side of Chavez's head but Chavez sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Lee throws a sloppy head kick and Chavez moves out of range easily.
Chavez takes a kick to the side of the head.
Chavez shoots in for a double leg but Lee sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Lee throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Chavez counters by moving into the clinch.

Lee breaks from the clinch.
Chavez dives in for a single leg takedown but Lee sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Chavez manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Lee trying to stand up but can't free himself from Chavez's guard.

Lee trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Chavez pulls Lee in close to his closed guard and prevents Lee from doing any damage or advancing position.
Chavez has a closed guard, preventing Lee from standing up.

Chavez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lee doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lee manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Lee would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chavez is pulling down on Lee's head. It's preventing any offense from Lee, at least for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Chavez shoots in looking for a takedown. Lee tries to sprawl out of it but Chavez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Lee manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Bruce Lee has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Felipe Chavez.

Chavez throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Lee was covering up waiting for the punch and Chavez finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Chavez tries to free his leg and advance position but Lee is retaining full guard.
Chavez is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Chavez wants to control from the top but Lee keeps moving.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Lee misses with a looping left.
Lee stalks Chavez and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Chavez's face. Chavez staggers backwards, shaken.
Lee is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Chavez can do to turn this around?

Bruce Lee is winning the standup battle so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Chavez closes the distance and clinches up with Lee, looking for a takedown. Chavez pushes Lee against the cage but Lee circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Chavez tries to score a power double leg takedown but Lee sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Chavez somewhat.
Bruce Lee seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Chavez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Chavez looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Bruce Lee is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Chavez misses with a few strikes there.

Lee misses with a wild combination.

Chavez drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Chavez looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Chavez is looking to take a break and control but Lee is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Chavez wants to take a breather but Lee manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Chavez.

Chavez is taking a breather. Lee says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Chavez is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Lee has managed to free his arm - good work.
Chavez wants to pass the guard but Lee is defending well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Chavez is stalling here. Lee is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Chavez seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Lee has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

That was a close second round but I would say that Bruce Lee will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Chavez has closed the distance and engaged Lee in a clinch.
Lee trying to stall but Chavez improves his position.

Lee breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Lee throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lee lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Lee.

Lee misses with a double jab.
Lee throws a right and a left that both miss.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Chavez.
Lee moves out of range of the body kick.

Lee looks to land a combination but Chavez avoids it well.

and Lee counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Lee pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Chavez back to the cage. Lee follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Chavez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lee keeps working.

Chavez tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Chavez has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Chavez is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Lee is not content to let Chavez control the position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Chavez swings around for an armbar but Lee sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Chavez's guard.
Felipe Chavez has got the better of the ground game so far.
Lee would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Felipe Chavez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Chavez is pulling down on Lee's head. It's preventing any offense from Lee, at least for the moment.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lee, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
