PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sean Mess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Freddie Figgjo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Figgjo's choice of entrance music: Edward Grieg. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Sean Mess!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 1, fighting out of London, Freddie Figgjo!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Steven Brown and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Figgjo throws the left hand but Mess avoids the punch easily.
Sean Mess seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Mess closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Mess lands in his opponent's guard.
Mess stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Figgjo swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Figgjo had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Mess is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Figgjo Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Mess's back instead.
Mess wants to escape the position.
Mess turns into Figgjo and is now in his guard.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Figgjo working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mess doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mess manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Mess sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Figgjo's guard.
Mess passes to full mount!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Figgjo is trying desperately to improve position.
Mess throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Figgjo because Mess loaded up on that one.
Figgjo is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Mess thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Mess working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Mess putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mess misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Mess swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Figgjo is now in Mess's guard. A big mistake from Mess there, giving up the dominant position!
Mess is breathing heavily.

Mess is looking for a triangle here but Figgjo uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Figgjo is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mess has escaped the position, nice work there.
Figgjo is looking to take a break and control but Mess is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mess tries to bench press Figgjo off him but Figgjo keeps the position.

Figgjo tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Figgjo has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Sean Mess will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Nice takedown defense from Figgjo. No joy for Mess on that attempt.
Mess shoots for a double leg takedown but Figgjo sprawls well. He's pushed Mess's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Mess fails to land the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sean Mess. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mess closes the distance and clinches up with Figgjo, looking for a takedown. Mess pushes Figgjo against the ropes but Figgjo circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mess shoots for a takedown but Figgjo saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Figgjo circles away from the clinch attempt.
Mess takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Figgjo swats away the attempt to clinch by Mess.
Freddie Figgjo is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Mess slips a jab from Figgjo.
Mess ducks right into an uppercut from Figgjo.
Figgjo misses with a looping right.
Figgjo lands with a shot to the body.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Figgjo slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Figgjo tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Mess paws at him with a jab and circles away.

and Figgjo lands a stunning uppercut that sends Mess to the mat!


Mess is rocked!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Figgjo lands a big elbow - Mess is out of it! He's waving his arms around but his eyes are closed and he's not intelligently defending himself - the ref has no choice but to jump in and stop the fight! This one is in the books! A TKO win for Figgjo!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Freddie Figgjo! Freddie Figgjo retains his lightweight title!
