PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Julio Cortazar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Reid Richards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Julio Cortazar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Reid Richards!
The judges for this bout are Sandra Marshall, Dirk Anderson and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Richards shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Cortazar pinned against the cage. Cortazar gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Cortazar feinted with a counter takedown.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Cortazar.
Richards stuffs the takedown.
Richards tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cortazar defends well and Richards ends up having to push Cortazar into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Richards looks to land a combination. Cortazar sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Richards scores with a jab to the head.

Cortazar stuffs the takedown attempt from Richards. Richards gets slowly back to his feet.
Julio Cortazar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Reid Richards.
Cortazar doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Richards counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Richards tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cortazar defends well and Richards ends up having to push Cortazar into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Richards wants to clinch up but Cortazar keeps it at a distance.
Richards shoots for a takedown but Cortazar saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Cortazar definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Cortazar closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cortazar lands in his opponent's guard.

Richards might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Cortazar haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Richards bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Cortazar's guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Richards accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Richards must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Cortazar is looking to stand up but Richards isn't so interested in that idea.
Richards looking to sit in guard and control but Cortazar gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Cortazar with a flurry of punches that miss.

Cortazar drops back looking for a leg! Richards is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Richards manages to kick Cortazar off! Cortazar jumps back into Richards's guard.
Cortazar wants to control from the top but Richards keeps moving.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Richards is striking but Cortazar is not phased and passes to half guard.

Cortazar is looking for a kimura but Richards is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Cortazar to get the leverage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Cortazar is trying to control. Richards wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Richards trying to hold on to Cortazar's head to control him but Cortazar postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Julio Cortazar will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Richards throws a head kick that misses.
Cortazar shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Richards but Richards pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Oooooh!!! Richards has knocked Cortazar down with a huge combo! Richards steps away and waves a wobbly Cortazar back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!

Cortazar is trying hard to land a takedown here. Richards sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Richards wants to counter the offense by Cortazar and move into the clinch position.
Richards has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Cortazar is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Richards wants to control but Cortazar is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Cortazar is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Richards doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Cortazar.
Richards pushes Cortazar off looking to stand but Cortazar dives back in and keeps control.
Cortazar wants to lay and pray for a moment but Richards keeps working.

Richards is staying active underneath Cortazar, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Cortazar not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Richards throws a solid leg kick but Cortazar takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Richards.

Reid Richards seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Richards shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Julio Cortazar is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Cortazar.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Julio Cortazar. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Richards doesn't manage to clinch there - Cortazar circles away.
Cortazar keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Reid Richards showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Cortazar is trying to pull guard but Richards turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Richards throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Cortazar works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Cortazar wants to stand up but Richards is controlling him.

Richards postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Richards wants to get up but he can't break Cortazar's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Richards stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cortazar swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Richards throws a strike but Cortazar rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Cortazar stands and throws Richards's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Richards is looking for a sweep.
Richards is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Cortazar is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Richards tries to hold on but Cortazar postures up.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Richards can do anything to dispel that myth.

Richards tries to reverse the position but Cortazar maintains control.
Richards really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cortazar. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Cortazar connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Richards is in a horrible position here. Cortazar smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
