Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mervin Tanner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, George Merfis! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yukihiro Shimada and Shigeki Sano.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Merfis darts in and clinches Tanner up against the cage. Merfis pulls guard effortlessly. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Merfis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Merfis is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Merfis working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Tanner. Merfis will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Merfis is pulling down on Tanner's head to control his posture. Merfis throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
That's one minute gone in the round. Tanner tries to score a power double leg takedown but Merfis sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Tanner somewhat. Merfis is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Tanner's half guard. Tanner throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Tanner has his hands clasped together around Merfis's back. He's all about the action. Tanner looking for submissions off his back. Tanner desperately trying to maintain half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tanner looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Merfis is pressing down on Tanner's thigh, looking to free his foot. Tanner is holding on for now. Tanner wants to control but Merfis is keeping busy and won't allow it. Tanner is controlling Merfis's position as best he can from this difficult position. Well, if Merfis is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Tanner is not content to let Merfis control the position. Tanner is looking to control Merfis's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Tanner avoid being mounted? Tanner looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Merfis is keen to just control but Tanner is a slippery customer. Merfis tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Tanner.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Merfis scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Merfis looks winded!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Tanner manages to get to full guard.
Tanner has his foot on Merfis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Merfis works his way back into a safe position though. Merfis got a little sloppy there for a moment and Tanner has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Merfis has managed to get both his arms back between Tanner's legs - danger averted. Tanner might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Tanner is looking to cinch up a triangle. Merfis throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Tanner's body to avoid the submission. Tanner has instead reached around Merfis's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Tanner arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
