PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kobe Romeo Paris (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Maxwell Rubin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The judges for this bout are Josh West, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rubin wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Rubin swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Rubin fails to land the takedown.
Paris keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Horrible takedown attempt by Paris or perhaps it was just good defense by Rubin, which made it look bad.
Maxwell Rubin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rubin throws a big shot that misses.
Paris on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Paris lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rubin shoots for a double leg takedown but Paris sprawls well. He's pushed Rubin's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Paris moves into the clinch.
We've been hearing reports that Paris has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

Paris goes for a takedown in the clinch but Rubin prevents it.
Paris creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Paris has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Rubin avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Rubin is pressed up against the cage. Paris has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Rubin down to the mat. Rubin avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Rubin pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Rubin will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

and Paris counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Rubin!
Rubin tries to bench press Paris off him but Paris keeps the position.
Paris will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The strikes coming from Paris are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Paris looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Rubin is looking to reverse the position.
Rubin manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Rubin seems to be working for a kimura but Paris defends the submission attempt.
My spies in Intelligent Design inform me that Rubin has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Rubin avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Rubin postures up in Paris's guard and throws a big left but Paris blocks it.

Maxwell Rubin dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Rubin checks a leg kick.
A slow jab from Paris misses its intended target.
Paris swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Rubin shoots in looking for a takedown. Paris tries to sprawl out of it but Rubin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Paris manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Paris rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Rubin moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Rubin feints and then cracks Paris's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Paris down.
Paris throws a lazy right hand but Rubin sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Rubin changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Rubin thows a body kick. Paris tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Rubin lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Paris at a distance.
Rubin throws a nice outside leg kick.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Paris takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Rubin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Kobe Romeo Paris has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Maxwell Rubin.

Rubin bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Rubin lands a decent elbow from side control.
Rubin creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Paris is looking for a sweep.
Paris is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Rubin is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Rubin is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Paris defends it well.

Paris tries to kick Rubin off but Rubin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Paris is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Rubin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Rubin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rubin got a little sloppy there for a moment and Paris has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Rubin has managed to get both his arms back between Paris's legs - danger averted.

Maxwell Rubin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Rubin looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Kobe Romeo Paris has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rubin thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Paris's head.

Paris tries to roll over but Rubin keeps him under control.
Rubin winds up and cracks Paris with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Rubin is looking to take a break and control but Paris is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Rubin's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Paris flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Rubin seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Maxwell Rubin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Rubin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
