Shango is defending well but Smith drives through and ends up in Shango's guard. Smith drops back, looking for a kneebar! Shango looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Shango looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Shango! Smith is positioning himself to get back to half guard. I've been told that Shango has been drilling his wrestling of late, which has already helped him take this fight to the mat. Let's see how much of an impact it has on the outcome of the ground game. Shango is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Smith has escaped the position, nice work there. Smith has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Smith tries to get back to half guard but can't. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shango thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Smith is looking for a sweep. Shango slows the pace down. Smith prevents Shango from moving into mount.
That's one minute gone in the round. Shango tries for a kimura but Smith is defending well. Smith might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Smith is looking to regain half guard here but Shango keeps moving and retains side control. Shango looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Smith is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Shango content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Shango is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Smith has hold of a guillotine but he's not going to be able to crank on it really with only half guard, so it's no trouble for Shango. Oh but Smith has got full guard now! Oh boy! This one could be over very soon! Shango goes limp - he's gone! Smith jumps up and celebrates with the crowd - fantastic submission finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Jason Smith!
