Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kenichi Shirahama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kyle Carlton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Shirahama's entrance music is Fade To Black. A fine choice. Kyle Carlton told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the super heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
34 - 15 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kenichi Shirahama! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
33 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kyle Carlton! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Carlton is looking to clinch. Shirahama on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Carlton. Carlton obviously looking to wear him down.
A jab from Shirahama does it's job there. Carlton misses with an uppercut. Shirahama saw that one coming. Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world. Shirahama will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Carlton misses the jab. Shirahama changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Carlton swings away with a leg kick that misses. Shirahama appears to be looking for a counter takedown. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Carlton misses with a looping right. Shirahama shoots in but no luck this time. Shirahama sets himself, and Carlton steps forward looking for the clinch! Shirahama avoids it this time. Carlton tries to clinch but fails miserably and Shirahama counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Carlton thinking.

and Shirahama counters with a right hand to the body. Carlton throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Shirahama. Shirahama's corner calls for a 1-2. Shirahama obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. The fighters circling - Carlton throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Shirahama shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Carlton but Carlton pushes him off and we're back to square one. Carlton tries to counter with a clinch but Shirahama shakes him off and moves away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kenichi Shirahama. That's going to take a lot out of him. Carlton feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Shirahamas jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist! Carlton looks to land a combination but Shirahama avoids it well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shirahama lunges at Carlton with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Carlton's hand. Shirahama tries for a takedown but Carlton sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Carlton tries to clinch but Shirahama moves out of range. Shirahama was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit. Carlton has worked on his takedown defense in the runup to this fight and it is paying off so far. Carlton ducks right into an uppercut from Shirahama. Carlton tries to clinch but Shirahama moves away and Carlton takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Shirahama looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Shirahama throws a hook to the side of Carlton's head but Carlton sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Carlton gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Shirahama tries to pull guard but Carlton forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Shirahama working hard to break the clinch. Shirahama looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Carlton misses with a hook to the ribs.

A short uppercut from Carlton. Carlton tries to work over Shirahama's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target. Shirahama breaks the clinch.
Carlton throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Shirahama swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect. Carlton catches Shirahama with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong! Carlton tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Shirahama throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Carlton tries to clinch up. Kyle Carlton is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Shirahama fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Carlton avoids it really well and circles away. Shirahama avoids a punch combination nicely.
Shirahama fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Shirahama shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Carlton but Carlton pushes him off and we're back to square one. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Kyle Carlton dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Shirahama looks to land a combination but Carlton avoids it well. A telegraphed right hand from Carlton misses the target. A punch combination from Shirahama misses. A jab from Shirahama does it's job there. Carlton tries to sprawl but Shirahama drives through with a takedown into half guard. Shirahama thows a huge punch but Carlton dodges it nicely.
Carlton tries to kick Shirahama off but Shirahama keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shirahama winds up and cracks Carlton with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Shirahama wants to pass the guard but Carlton is defending well. Shirahama is trying to control the action in half guard but Carlton is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. We've been hearing good reports from Shirahama's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Shirahama is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Carlton doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Shirahama. Carlton keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Carlton is trying to maintain the position but Shirahama is very close to passing his half guard. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Shirahama wants to pass to mount but Carlton is defending the position. Shirahama scoring with strikes to the body and head. Carlton wants to improve his position but Shirahama is controlling well.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. A solid leg kick lands there for Carlton.
Carlton tests Shirahama's chin there with a solid looking shot. Carlton lands with a nice combination. Shirahama backs away looking to recover. Carlton tries to clinch but Shirahama moves out of range. Shirahama half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Shirahama slips a straight right by Carlton. Carlton walks into a stiff left hand from Shirahama.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A left lands for Shirahama. Carlton tries to clinch up. Shirahama was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Carlton tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Shirahama paws at him with a jab and circles away. Shirahama half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Carlton walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Carlton tries to clinch but Shirahama is having none of it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shirahama bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Carlton's head. Shirahama is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches. Shirahama lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Carlton keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Shirahama shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Shirahama not landing any meaningful shots this time. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Carlton controlling the position for now. Shirahama is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
That's one minute gone in the round. Shirahama cracks Carlton with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Shirahama throwing strikes here but Carlton is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Carlton holds on to Shirahama around his waist, trying desperately to prevent any attacks. Shirahama has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Carlton is trying desperately to improve position. Shirahama looking to ground and pound but Carlton is blocking nicely. Carlton is looking to get to half guard. Shirahama thowing shots but they're missing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shirahama lands a nice shot to the head. Shirahama misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Carlton really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
