Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Merle Santiago! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, James Carter! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Donatello Bradman and Ben Watson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Santiago slips under a jab. Carter fails in his attempt to clinch. Santiago really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Santiago has taken the fight to the clinch.
Carter has hold of one of Santiago's legs. Santiago is fighting the takedown attempt but Carter gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard. Santiago looking for subs off his back but Carter has passed one foot through into half guard.
Carter keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Santiago wants to improve his position but Carter is controlling well.
Carter is figuring out what he wants to do next.
That's one minute gone in the round. Carter tries to stand but can't do so whilst Santiago controls his leg. Santiago slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Santiago looking for a guillotine here but Carter defends easily.
Carter is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Carter stands up from Santiago's guard - Carter perhaps looking for a knockout. A head kick misses from Carter. Carter swats away the attempt to clinch by Santiago. Santiago on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. James Carter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A head kick misses from Carter. Carter looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Santiago connects with a leg kick. Carter looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it. Santiago has a takedown stuffed. Carter lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Santiago is rocked! Carter lands a jab and follows it up with a massive straight that knocks Santiago out cold! Santiago is crumpled in the corner, his head only propped up by the cage! That's one for the organiziational promos right there! Wow, what a finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:38 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). James Carter!
