PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bret Irwin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Carrot (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Bret Irwin has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Bret Irwin seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bret Irwin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Carrot!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Tiny Johnson and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carrot shoots in and drives through. Irwin sprawls well.
Irwin is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Carrot.
Carrot looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Carrot has his takedown stuffed
and Irwin counters with a left and a right that stings Carrot.

Irwin has taken the fight to the clinch.
Irwin stalling the fight.
Irwin wants a takedown but no success here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Irwin ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Irwin no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Carrot must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Irwin is adopting a defensive guard.
Irwin continues to stall.
My spies in Den of Tears (22 coaches, $425 fee) inform me that Carrot has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Irwin fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Carrot, pushing him back against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Irwin is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Carrot gets caught napping as Irwin dives in and scores a takedown. Carrot manages to retain guard.
Irwin stays in close to Carrot's body and controls the position.

Carrot is working an open guard so Irwin takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Sloppy strikes from Irwin. Those never looked like landing.

Irwin clinches up with Carrot and pushes him back against the cage.

Carrot tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Irwin just stands there and leans against the cage.

Carrot keeps control of Irwin as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Irwin works on Carrot's body with a couple of short punches.
Irwin looks to throw an elbow but misses.

Irwin is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Carrot can't fight it off and eventually Irwin manages to take the fight to the floor. Carrot looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Irwin chips away with some ground and pound.

Irwin lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Irwin scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Irwin's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Irwin's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Carrot is trying to push Irwin away but Irwin has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Irwin lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Carrot or not.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Carrot gets underhooks to prevent Irwin's takedown attempt.

Irwin is pressed up against the cage. Carrot has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Irwin down to the mat. Irwin avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Carrot throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Irwin's waist but Irwin gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Carrot off to one side.
Irwin seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
John Carrot seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fight stays on the outside here - Carrot looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
