2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Anderson! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Eddie Farnsworth and Anthony Taglia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wharton throws a looping overhand right but Anderson ducks down to avoid it. The fighters circling - Wharton throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Anderson moves into the clinch. Anderson ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Anderson no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Anderson trying to keep a closed guard but Wharton is proving a slippery customer.
Wharton controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Anderson looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Wharton puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Anderson has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it. Wharton wants to control but Anderson is keeping him busy. Wharton throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Anderson wants to sweep here but Wharton controlling him for the moment. Wharton has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Wharton stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Wharton wants it to stay on the feet. Anderson tries to close the distance and clinch up but Wharton swats him away and circles back towards the center. Anderson fails with a takedown attempt. Anderson slips a jab from Wharton. That's three minutes gone in the round. Wharton has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Anderson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Anderson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Wharton. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Wharton is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Anderson is stalling in the full guard. Anderson postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Wharton is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Wharton escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Anderson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Anderson wanted to stand there but Wharton had control of the position. Anderson slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Wharton pushes a forearm under Anderson's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Anderson is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
