1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jean Claude Pierre! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Luis Engracia and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pierre throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gene tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Pierre is in Gene's guard. Gene keeping full guard, as Pierre tries to pass. Pierre throws a big elbow that misses. Pierre makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Pierre won't allow Gene to sweep him here. Gene being controlled here, momentarily. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Pierre really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gene. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Pierre trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gene is trying to keep Pierre in close.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Nice body punch from Pierre. Gene throws a low kick but it's checked well by Pierre. Pierre uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Gene.

Pierre ducks under a wild hook from Gene. Pierre is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. Pierre fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Gene uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Pierre. Pierre shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Pierre keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Pierre lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Gene is looking for a sweep. Pierre is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pierre controlling the action here. Gene wants to control but Pierre is keeping busy and won't allow it. Gene looking for submissions off his back. Pierre stalling.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Gene has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Pierre finds it's way round the side to connect with Gene's head. Pierre shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Gene is trying to defend but Pierre finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Pierre is nestled in close to Gene, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pierre keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Gene wants to get back to full guard. Gene looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Gene wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Gene is trying to maintain the position but Pierre is very close to passing his half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jean Claude Pierre dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Gene drops Pierre with a left right combo! Gene follows him down to the ground into side control.

It looks like Jean Claude Pierre has been cut. Gene gets to mount! Pierre was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly. Pierre is still in real trouble! Can Gene finish him? Pierre tries to hold on but Gene postures up. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Gene is working for a guillotine from mount but Pierre frees his head quite easily.
Pierre is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Pierre seems to have recovered his senses. Gene jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Pierre manages to avoid the submission attempt. Pierre is trying to control Gene's posture but Gene avoids it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pierre might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Gene haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Pierre tries to improve position but can't. Gene fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Pierre tries to buck Gene off but Gene is having none of it. Pierre is holding Gene down, trying to stall. Gene in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time. Pierre tries to get back to half guard but can't. Gene is looking to take a break and control but Pierre is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Gene postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Pierre wants to control but Gene postures up. Gene wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pierre keeps working. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pierre can do anything to dispel that myth. Pierre manages to get back to half guard. Pierre keeping control of the position. Gene throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pierre misses with a looping left. Gene fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Pierre. Pierre feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Gene has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Pierre doesn't defend quickly enough and Gene has managed to lock this one up! Can Pierre escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Gene on a fantastic submission victory.
