PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tyron Woodley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Takanori Gomi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gomi has chosen Scary as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighter's entrance songs getting the crowd jumping here.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tyron Woodley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 10 - 2, fighting out of Tokyo, Takanori Gomi!
The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Nard Betker and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gomi cracks Woodley with a solid left hand.
Woodley has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Gomi has passed into side control.
Woodley tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Gomi wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gomi misses with an attempted head punch from side control.

Gomi misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Woodley is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Gomi's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Gomi connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Woodley momentarily.
Woodley looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gomi is fending him off so far but Woodley persists. Nope, Gomi circles away and we're back to standing.
And Gomi tries to counter it with a takedown but Woodley pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Gomi jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.
Gomi misses with a double jab.
Gomi scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Woodley misses with a takedown attempt - Gomi sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Gomi is looking for the big counter here.

As Gomi backs away, Woodley returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Gomi connects with a crisp jab.
Gomi lands a lovely overhand right.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Woodley.
A nice side step and Gomi releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Gomi slaps away a takedown attempt from Woodley, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Gomi throws a lazy right hand but Woodley sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Woodley throws a combination. Gomi tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

Woodley throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gomi.
Woodley throws a hook to the side of Gomi's head but Gomi sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

As Gomi looks to move away, Woodley throws a big counter combo bu Gomi just gets out of the way.

so Gomi counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Gomi wants to control from the top but Woodley keeps moving.
Woodley looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Woodley holds on and takes a little breather.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Takanori Gomi dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business.



Gomi bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Gomi wants to control but Woodley is keeping him busy.
Gomi works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Woodley is looking to reverse the position.
Woodley regains half guard.
Gomi missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Woodley is looking to control Gomi's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Woodley avoid being mounted?

Gomi takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Gomi thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Woodley's head.
Gomi is trying to control the action in half guard but Woodley is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Woodley changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gomi tries to avoid it but Woodley manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gomi to the ground. Gomi escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Woodley tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Gomi defends well and Woodley ends up having to push Gomi into the ropes where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Woodley moves away from the strike by Gomi.
Gomi scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Woodley fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Gomi avoids it really well and circles away.
Woodley dives in and grabs Gomi's left leg, looking for a takedown. Gomi pushes down on Woodley's head and hops out.
Gomi looks to score with a jab to the body but Woodley is just out of range.
Woodley fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
The fighters circling - Woodley throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Gomi misses with a hook. Woodley ducked under it nicely.
Woodley closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Gomi has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Woodley connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Woodley throws a right hand that Gomi ducks under and follows up with a left that Gomi also avoids with ease.
A telegraphed right hand from Gomi misses the target.

A decent looking cross lands there for Gomi.

Gomi shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Woodley's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Gomi wants to control from the top but Woodley keeps moving.

Gomi escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Woodley gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Woodley avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Gomi wants to control the position but Woodley says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Tyron Woodley has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Gomi is trying to get back to full guard.

Gomi tries to roll over but Woodley keeps him under control.
Gomi is staying active underneath Woodley, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Gomi is looking for a sweep. Woodley is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Woodley has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Woodley lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Gomi is looking to get to half guard.
