Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Pat Small (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Shields (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
25 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Pat Small! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
24 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jake Shields! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Damien Edna and Ben Watson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Shields defending well as Small loads up on a big left hand. Shields tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. Small thows a left - swing and a miss! Shields feints the counter takedown. Shields avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Shields changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. Shields's coach down at The Shield was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Shields's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Small tries to land a leg kick but Shields saw it coming and moves away.

It looks like Jake Shields has been cut. Small throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Shields sees it coming and avoids it easily. Shields is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Shields checks a leg kick. Shields drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Small defends it well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Small's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Small duly obliges. Small throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. A combination from Small does no damage. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Small buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
The fighters circle momentarily. Small darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Small thuds his right hand into Shields's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Small fails to land with a series of punches.

The cut above Jake Shields's eye is starting to cause him problems now. A looping hook to the body misses from Small. Shields does a little dance to reset his feet. Small throws a leg kick that is checked and Shields counters with a nice double leg into side control. Small won't be happy with that. Shields goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Small rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Shields's guard! Nice work there by Small! Shields keeping moving, preventing Small from controlling successfully. Small looking to pass the guard. Shields will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Small perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Shields looking for submissions off his back. Shields is refusing to be controlled, as Small sits in half guard.

Small lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
