Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
16 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kevin James! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Brian Gummidge! The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Chris Edwards and Phil Schofield.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! James looks for a takedown but Gummidge sprawls well. Gummidge slips a straight right by James. Gummidge tries to counter by closing the distance. James connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. James fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Gummidge to the ground. James is now in Gummidge's guard. James preventing the sweep. James got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gummidge has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, James has managed to get both his arms back between Gummidge's legs - danger averted. James is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. James looking to pass the guard. James is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. James wants to control from the top but Gummidge keeps moving.
That's one minute gone in the round. James slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. James wants to pass the guard but Gummidge is keeping the position. James throws a big right hand that misses. James preventing the sweep. Gummidge can't keep his opponent in guard - James advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. James landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Gummidge is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but James pulls his head out easily. James is trying to control the action in half guard but Gummidge is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. James is pressing down on Gummidge's thigh, looking to free his foot. Gummidge is holding on for now. James is keen to just control but Gummidge is a slippery customer. James trying to mount his opponent but Gummidge defends it. Gummidge is looking to control James's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gummidge avoid being mounted? The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. James thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Gummidge is staying active underneath James, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Gummidge gets full guard. Gummidge wants to sweep here but James controlling him for the moment. Gummidge looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
That's three minutes gone in the round. James scoring with some ground and pound. James lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Gummidge has an active guard here but James has managed to pass into half guard.
James works his way into side control. Gummidge manages to get back to half guard. The fighters are battling for position here. Gummidge manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Gummidge has his foot on James's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. James works his way back into a safe position though. James scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Gummidge bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in James's guard.
Gummidge throws a sloppy strike and James has hooked up an armbar on the loose arm! He's turned and extended fully! Gummidge is forced to tap! Great BJJ from James!
