Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Francisco Sparks! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Little Joe! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Tiny Johnson and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Joe gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Sparks throwing strikes but missing. Joe looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Sparks throwing strikes from guard but Joe blocks nicely. Joe pulls Sparks in close to his closed guard and prevents Sparks from doing any damage or advancing position. Sparks throws a big right hand that misses. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sparks gets to his feet. Joe looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Joe gets caught napping as Sparks dives in and scores a takedown. Joe manages to retain guard. Sparks postures up in Joe's guard and throws a big left but Joe blocks it. Sparks stands up over Joe, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sparks drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Joe manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Sparks has Joe in his guard. Sparks keeping moving, preventing Joe from controlling successfully. Sparks will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Sparks is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Joe wants to control from the top but Sparks keeps moving. Sparks pulls Joe in close to his closed guard and prevents Joe from doing any damage or advancing position. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Joe has eaten all the pies!
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Sparks keeping moving, preventing Joe from controlling successfully. Sparks seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Joe has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Sparks is proving hard to escape from. Joe pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sparks is keeping the position for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sparks is trying to keep Joe in close.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Joe looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. It looks like Joe is going to stand back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sparks pushes Joe off looking to stand but Joe dives back in and keeps control.
Sparks trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful. Joe is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Sparks reverses the position - he's now on top in Joe's guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sparks decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Joe tries to clinch up. Sparks looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Sparks really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Sparks decides to stand up. Sparks throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Joe was covering up waiting for the punch and Sparks finishes the takedown easily into guard. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Joe is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Francisco Sparks dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Joe scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Sparks prevents Joe from improving position. Joe is trying to get an arm triangle but Sparks is defending well. Sparks bucks up and tries to throw Joe off but instead Joe has got his back! We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sparks is trying to break free.

That's one minute gone in the round. Joe is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Sparks knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Sparks for a finish. Joe is not going to allow Sparks to sit and survive in this position. Joe looking for the rear naked choke. And he's got it! Sparks taps!
