PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Randall Guthrie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Billy Boyer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Boyer's choice of entrance music: Trophies. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Billy Boyer was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Randall Guthrie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Billy Boyer!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Edson Gomes and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Boyer throws a left and a right that both miss

and Guthrie counters by clinching up.
Knees in the clinch landing for Boyer.

Boyer pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Boyer lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.


It looks like Randall Guthrie has been cut.

Boyer clinches.

Boyer breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Boyer throws a series of strikes that have Guthrie backpedaling.
Guthrie avoids the head kick by Boyer.
Boyer has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Guthrie is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Guthrie really is a fat lump.

Boyer drops Guthrie with a right and a left! Boyer comes rushing in but Guthrie regains his composure and manages to keep Boyer in guard.


Guthrie is rocked!
Boyer looks winded!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Boyer is looking to work some ground and pound but Guthrie has wrist control.
Oh Guthrie is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Boyer slips nicely into half guard.
Boyer perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Boyer sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Guthrie defending well though.

Guthrie regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Boyer.
Guthrie manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Boyer manages to get himself to full guard.


Boyer scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Guthrie seems to have got his legs back now.
Boyer tries to clinch up
and Guthrie counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Boyer throws a head kick that misses

and Guthrie counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Boyer's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Boyer will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
It looked like Guthrie was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Boyer lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Guthrie circles away quickly and effectively.
Guthrie is looking for a counter combo.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Boyer defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Guthrie.

Boyer gets caught napping as Guthrie dives in and scores a takedown. Boyer manages to retain guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Guthrie thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Boyer wants to stand and escape but Guthrie is having none of it.
Guthrie might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Guthrie's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Guthrie drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Guthrie jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Boyer has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Boyer wants to sweep here but Guthrie controlling him for the moment.
Boyer trying to keep a closed guard but Guthrie is proving a slippery customer.
Boyer wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Boyer attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Guthrie misses with a low kick.
Boyer lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Guthrie shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Boyer is trying to maintain the position but Guthrie is very close to passing his half guard.
Boyer is looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Guthrie's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Guthrie keeps the fight on the outside.
Billy Boyer seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Guthrie slips a jab and a cross from Boyer.
Boyer just manages to avoid a counter high kick fromGuthrie.
Billy Boyer is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Guthrie avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Nice body kick from Boyer.
Boyer throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
An inside leg kick from Guthrie misses.
Guthrie needs to keep his hands up - Boyer had a free shot at his head there.
Billy Boyer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Boyer is breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Boyer. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Guthrie slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Randall Guthrie overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Boyer wants to get back to his feet but Guthrie is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Guthrie controls from within his opponent's guard.
Boyer keeping moving, preventing Guthrie from controlling successfully.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Guthrie works over Boyer with some ground and pound from guard.

Guthrie drops back, looking for a kneebar! Boyer looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Boyer looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Boyer!

Guthrie manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Guthrie is working for a submission of some sort.

Guthrie is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Boyer has managed to free his arm - good work.

Boyer is not content to let Guthrie control the position.
Guthrie takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Still in half guard, Guthrie seems content to control.
Boyer has a hand on Guthrie's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Guthrie takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Guthrie trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Boyer working to try and regain half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Guthrie is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Boyer has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Boyer!

That was a close second round but I would say that Randall Guthrie will probably get the nod.

No luck for Guthrie with that takedown attempt.
Boyer's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Boyer duly obliges.
Guthrie showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Boyer.
Guthrie misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Boyer takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Guthrie tries to clinch up but Boyer circles away and keeps his distance.
Guthrie throws a sloppy head kick and Boyer moves out of range easily.
As Guthrie backs off Boyer throws a huge counter combo but Guthrie manages to avoid it all.

Guthrie takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.


Randall Guthrie's cut is getting worse.
Guthrie is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Boyer.
Boyer tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Guthrie manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Guthrie is looking to counter the offense by Boyer and move into the clinch.

Boyer closes the distance and clinches.
Boyer content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Boyer is looking to break free of the clinch but Guthrie has double underhooks.
Boyer tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Boyer wants to get back to striking at distance but Guthrie won't allow it.
Boyer on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.

Boyer breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Guthrie avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
Guthrie half committed to a counter leg kick.
Guthrie blocks a leg kick.
Guthrie shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Boyer as he avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Randall Guthrie. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Guthrie counters with a takedown into side control.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Guthrie wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Boyer, who protects the arm well.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Boyer wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Guthrie is trying to get an arm triangle but Boyer is defending well.
Guthrie trying to control the action but Boyer is working from the bottom.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Guthrie is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Boyer is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

And that's the end of the fight!
Billy Boyer comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Boyer has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Billy Boyer spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
