PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Isiah Nguyen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rohny James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rohny James will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Isiah Nguyen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rohny James!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Trevor Gratis and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Nguyen rushes James and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Nguyen jumps guard but James turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

James lands a takedown into guard.
James preventing the sweep.
James showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

Nguyen pushes James off and gets back to his feet.

Nguyen has managed to clinch.
Nguyen keeps control of James as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Nguyen is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables James to keep the fight standing.
Come on Nguyen - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Nguyen fails to pull guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Isiah Nguyen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
James looking to stall.
James wants to break the clinch but can't.
Nguyen is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

James gets control of Nguyen's arms and successfully pulls guard. James will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
James utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Nguyen lands a couple of decent looking shots.

James had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Nguyen defends it easily.
James is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
James wants to stand and escape but Nguyen is having none of it.
Nguyen's corner is telling him to maintain position.
James wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Nguyen manages to pass to side control.

Nguyen is keen to just control but James is a slippery customer.
James tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Nguyen has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
James is squirming around, avoiding Nguyen's attempts to control the action.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
James tries to hold on but Nguyen postures up.
James is desperately trying to improve his position but Nguyen has a good base and remains in mount.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Nguyen cracks James with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
A nice elbow there by Nguyen.
James really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Nguyen lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Nguyen tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Isiah Nguyen dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



A momentary lapse in concentration from Nguyen enables James to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Nguyen manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nguyen pulls James in to control the position.
James wants to control from the top but Nguyen keeps moving.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nguyen is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. James is aware though and is defending well.
James tries to free his leg and advance position but Nguyen is retaining full guard.
Nguyen looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but James puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Nguyen is staying active underneath James, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Nguyen keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Nguyen moves into full guard.
James missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Nguyen looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Nguyen lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

James throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Nguyen wants to get up but he can't break James's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Nguyen's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Nguyen gets tackled into the cage by James. James maintains the clinch.
James makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

James ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. James no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Nguyen seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
James wants to sweep but no luck.
James is trying to hold Nguyen in close to prevent damage but Nguyen has managed to pass into half guard.

Nguyen is thwarting James's attempts to control the position.

Nguyen is looking to take a break and control but James is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Nguyen keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
James is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Nguyen jumps into side control!
Nguyen misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

James is looking to regain half guard here but Nguyen keeps moving and retains side control.
Nguyen in side control, just content to control the action for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rohny James showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Nguyen tries to close the distance and clinch but James swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
James throws a leg kick that misses.
It looked like Nguyen wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

Nguyen is looking to clinch but James is avoiding it.

James manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Nguyen on his heels. He'll look to pass Nguyen's guard now, I'm sure.
Nguyen manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. James manages to get himself to full guard.


James looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Nguyen passes into half guard.

Nguyen is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
James is trying to stand up here but Nguyen is controlling him well.

Nguyen thows a huge punch but James dodges it nicely.

Nguyen seems to be working for a kimura but James defends the submission attempt.
Nguyen takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Nguyen missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
James tries to get to full guard but Nguyen has control of the leg.

James kicks off Nguyen and gets to his feet.

Nguyen closes the distance and pushes James back into the cage.
James stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James wants to break the clinch but can't.
Nguyen pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
James is working Nguyen over against the cage.

James has clasped his hands together around Nguyen's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Nguyen managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by James.
Nguyen is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Nguyen is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but James has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Nguyen wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Nguyen is looking to regain half guard here but James keeps moving and retains side control.

Nguyen wants to control but James postures up.

James is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Nguyen knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Rohny James comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think James has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
