Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Vic Vantrell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
25 - 30 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Zorba The Greek! The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Chris Downing and Daniel Franklin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The Greek shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Vantrell sprawls well. Vantrell wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. The Greek gets slowly back to his feet. The Greek throws a nice looking combination but Vantrell bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Vantrell with a poor takedown and The Greek counters with a left and a right that stings Vantrell. A telegraphed takedown attempt from The Greek is defended easily by Vantrell. Vantrell tries to counter by clinching up but The Greek breaks away and moves out of range. Vantrell lands a head shot. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. The Greek looks to land a combination but Vantrell avoids it well. Zorba The Greek seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. The Greek misses with a wild combination.
Vantrell attempts a counter takedown but The Greek avoids it well and moves away. The Greek shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Vantrell as he jumps to the side. Vic Vantrell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Zorba The Greek.
That's one minute gone in the round. The Greek shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Vantrell shoots in for a takedown but The Greek shows good takedown defense. The Greek is looking for the big counter here. Vantrell lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Vantrell. A punch combination from Vantrell misses. Vantrell shoots in for a takedown but The Greek shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. The Greek throws a right and a left that Vantrell avoids nicely. Vantrell wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch. Vantrell is looking to clinch but The Greek is avoiding it.
The Greek fails to land with a series of punches.
The Greek misses with a takedown letting Vantrell counter with a right hand. Vantrell throws a nice looking combination but The Greek bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. The Greek changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Vantrell tries to avoid it but The Greek manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Vantrell to the ground. Vantrell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Vantrell closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. The Greek misses with a right hand and Vantrell counters with a series of strikes. The Greek will be more careful next time no doubt. The Greek bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. The Greek wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Vantrell, who protects the arm well. Vantrell tries to buck The Greek off but The Greek is having none of it. My spies in Mano`s Elite BJJ Gym inform me that The Greek has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! The Greek wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Vantrell, who protects the arm well. The Greek is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Vantrell is trying to escape and The Greek transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Vantrell is forced to tap! Nice work there by The Greek! Very nice indeed!
