PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nikolai Kovalenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dimas Boykiy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Boykiy is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Перемен. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 42 - 22 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Nikolai Kovalenko!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 21 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dimas Boykiy!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Fedor Mirinova and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Boykiy shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Boykiy was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Kovalenko tries to improve position but can't.

Kovalenko bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Kovalenko on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Boykiy. Boykiy obviously looking to wear him down.
Kovalenko throws a body kick despite being completely out of range
and Boykiy counters with a right hand to the body.
Kovalenko is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.


It looks like Dimas Boykiy has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Boykiy scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Kovalenko doesn't seem bothered though.
Boykiy swinging wildly here.
Kovalenko throws a body kick that misses.
Boykiy has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Boykiy tries to clinch there but Kovalenko circles away.
As Boykiy looks to move away, Kovalenko throws a big counter combo bu Boykiy just gets out of the way.
We've been told by Kovalenko's head coaches at Russian Top Team Elite Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Boykiy wants to clinch.
Boykiy uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Kovalenko.
Kovalenko thuds his shin into the meat of Boykiy's side.
Boykiy tries to clinch but Kovalenko moves out of range.

Boykiy pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Kovalenko looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Kovalenko dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Boykiy. That did some damage!

Kovalenko takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Some bone on bone action there as Kovalenko checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Kovalenko swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect.
Kovalenko throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Nice sprawl there from Kovalenko as Boykiy shoots in.
Boykiy tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Kovalenko lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Boykiy circles away quickly and effectively.
Boykiy fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Kovalenko scores with a nice head shot.

Kovalenko throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Boykiy has managed to clinch.
Boykiy swings wildly with an uppercut but Kovalenko uses good head movement to avoid it.

Kovalenko breaks the clinch.
Kovalenko rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Boykiy moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Boykiy tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Kovalenko was well out of range. Poor timing from Boykiy.
Kovalenko misses with an attempted mid kick.
Boykiy takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Kovalenko takes one to the side of the head.
Dimas Boykiy seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Boykiy throws a solid leg kick but Kovalenko takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Boykiy.

Boykiy moves into the clinch.
Boykiy tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Kovalenko avoids it.
Boykiy throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.

Kovalenko breaks the clinch.
Kovalenko cracks Boykiy with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.


That has opened up Dimas Boykiy's cut even more.

Kovalenko scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Kovalenko tries a head kick but it misses.
Kovalenko throws a right hand that Boykiy ducks under and follows up with a left that Boykiy also avoids with ease.
Boykiy misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Kovalenko lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Boykiy circles away quickly and effectively.
Kovalenko swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Boykiy is pushing Kovalenko up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Boykiy throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Kovalenkos head.
Kovalenko tries to break free but Boykiy pushes him back against the cage.

Kovalenko manages to break the clinch.
Boykiy takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kovalenko connects with a nice looking jab.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Kovalenko fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Boykiy pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Boykiy wants to clinch up but Kovalenko keeps it at a distance.
Boykiy fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Kovalenko checks it well.
Kovalenko bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Boykiy's head.


The cut above Dimas Boykiy's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
Kovalenko throws a jab when Boykiy was well out of range.

Boykiy closes the distance and clinches.
Boykiy misses with a punch on the inside.
A hook to the body from Boykiy.
Boykiy tries to circle away but Kovalenko has him pinned against the cage.
Boykiy trying to land knees to the body.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Boykiy pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Boykiy misses the jab.

Boykiy clinches with his opponent.
Boykiy tries to stall but Kovalenko uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Nikolai Kovalenko will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Dimas Boykiy's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Boykiy throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Kovalenko's head.
Kovalenko takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

Boykiy clinches up with Kovalenko and pushes him back against the cage.
Boykiy scores with a shot to the side of Kovalenko's head.
Boykiy scores a nice knee to the body.
Boykiy misses with a knee to the head.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Kovalenko as Boykiy tries to tie him up.
Boykiy tries to land knees in the clinch but Kovalenko avoids the damage to the body.
Kovalenko is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Boykiy is keeping busy.
Boykiy wants to break the clinch but can't.
Boykiy tries to land a knee to the head but misses.

Boykiy is trying to maintain a safe position but Kovalenko gets an underhook and turns Boykiy into the cage.

Boykiy using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Kovalenko has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Dimas Boykiy seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Kovalenko pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Boykiy tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Kovalenko manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Kovalenko slips under a jab from Boykiy.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Kovalenko - that will leave a mark!
Kovalenko is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.

Kovalenko tries to keep at a distance but Boykiy has taken the fight into the clinch.
Boykiy throws a knee to the head but misses.
Kovalenko blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Boykiy looks to throw an elbow but misses.
Boykiy misses with a hook to the ribs.

Kovalenko breaks from the clinch.
Kovalenko throws a right and a left that Boykiy avoids nicely.

Boykiy fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Kovalenko to the ground. Boykiy is now in Kovalenko's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Boykiy trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Boykiy trying to control but Kovalenko is working from the bottom.

Kovalenko is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Boykiy is controlling him.
Boykiy has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kovalenko is proving hard to escape from.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
A leg kick checked by Kovalenko.
Kovalenko moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Kovalenko takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Boykiy fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Boykiy misses with a low kick.
Nikolai Kovalenko is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Boykiy throws a leg kick
and Kovalenko cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.


Dimas Boykiy's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.
Kovalenko looks to land a combination but Boykiy avoids it well.
Kovalenko takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Boykiy tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kovalenko swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Kovalenko plants his feet and throws a 3 punch combo. Miss, miss, boom! The third punch, a big right hook, connects right on the temple and drops Boykiy to the mat, unconscious! This fight is all over! Boykiy just couldn't keep out of the way of the whole flurry of punches!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Nikolai Kovalenko!
An out of breath Nikolai Kovalenko thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
