Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ellis Mccullough! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Eric Whiting! The judges for this bout are Ben Hemmingworth, Bruno Hogan and Topper Green.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mccullough shoots in for a double leg but Whiting sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Whiting steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Mccullough. Whiting paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
It looks like Ellis Mccullough has been cut. Whiting closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mccullough quickly recovers to half guard. Whiting wants to stand up but Mccullough has a hold of him and won't allow it. Whiting is looking to take a break and control but Mccullough is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Whiting is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Mccullough has managed to free his arm - good work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mccullough gets full guard. Whiting must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's one minute gone in the round. Whiting seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Whiting trying to control but Mccullough is working from the bottom. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Whiting looking to sit in guard and control but Mccullough gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Mccullough is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Mccullough with a flurry of punches that miss. Whiting is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Whiting wants to stand up but Mccullough has a hold of him and won't allow it. Whiting missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Mccullough looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Whiting seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Whiting's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Whiting is keen to just control but Mccullough is a slippery customer.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Whiting closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Mccullough did well to prevent Whiting getting side control. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Whiting in particular looking to stall. Mccullough is in trouble now - Whiting has advanced to mount! Mccullough is squirming around, avoiding Whiting's attempts to control the action. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Whiting thowing shots but they're missing. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Eric Whiting dominated that round. The cut man is working on Ellis Mccullough's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Whiting misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Whiting throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Whiting forces Mccullough back against the cage and clinches. Whiting turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Whiting manages to end up in side control. Whiting has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Mccullough sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Eric Whiting has got the better of the ground game so far. Mccullough looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Mccullough is looking to control Whiting's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Mccullough avoid being mounted? We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Whiting is looking to stall in half guard but Mccullough is in no mood to hang around. He's locked up a Kimura from the bottom and has used it to sweep! He's held on to the kimura and is looking to finish here... will he get it... YES! Whiting taps out and the crowd goes crazy! Great finish!
