Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
58 - 28 - 0, fighting out of New York, Athan Stamatis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mitt Thrawn! The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Anthony Taglia and Bruno Lombardi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Stamatis bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Thrawn tries to close the distance and clinch up but Stamatis swats him away and circles back towards the center. Stamatis fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Thrawn. Stamatis misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Thrawn takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh. Thrawn throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Thrawn fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Stamatis, pushing him back against the cage. Thrawn goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Stamatis's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Thrawn tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him. Thrawn gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Stamatis to score an easy takedown into full guard. Thrawn is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Stamatis sitting in guard here, content to control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Stamatis stopping the sweep attempt from Thrawn. Stamatis controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Stamatis landing with the ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Stamatis preventing the sweep. Thrawn controls Stamatis momentarily but Stamatis frees himself. Stamatis postures up and lands a big shot to Thrawn's brow. Stamatis looking to control the position here, rather than advance. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Thrawn can do anything to dispel that myth. Thrawn is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Thrawn keeping moving, preventing Stamatis from controlling successfully. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Thrawn is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Stamatis controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Mitt Thrawn is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Thrawn on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
It looks like Mitt Thrawn has been cut. Thrawn fails with an attempt to clinch.
Stamatis lands with a thumping leg kick.
Thrawn tries to clinch up but Stamatis circles away and keeps his distance. A counter left hand to the body from Stamatis misses its target. Jab by Stamatis. Thrawn tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Thrawn misses with a hook to the body
and Stamatis cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Thrawn uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Stamatis.
Thrawn throws a body punch but Stamatis moves out of range.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Thrawn throws a predictable looking body shot
and Stamatis connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Thrawn on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Mitt Thrawn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Nice cross by Stamatis.
Thrawn is rocked! Thrawn throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Stamatis sees it coming and avoids it easily. Thrawn is still on wobbly legs! Can Stamatis finish him? Stamatis listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. A telegraphed right hand from Thrawn misses the target. Stamatis gets tackled into the cage by Thrawn. Thrawn maintains the clinch. Stamatis pressing his opponent against the cage. Thrawn seems to have recovered his senses. Stamatis stalling the fight.
Thrawn stops a takedown attempt from Stamatis.
Stamatis lands a left hand.
The referee is keeping an eye on Stamatis - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Stamatis will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Thrawn up against the cage. Stamatis avoids a wild elbow strike from Thrawn.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Thrawn misses with an elbow strike.
Thrawn throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Stamatis blocks an elbow strike from Thrawn.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Thrawn misses with an elbow over the top. Thrawn throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.

Thrawn tries a body shot but Stamatis blocks it.

Stamatis lands with a short head shot on the inside. Thrawn throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Stamatis lands with a light punch inside. Thrawn pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Athan Stamatis dominated that round. The cut man is working on Mitt Thrawn's cut. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Stamatis lands a front kick. Thrawn misses with a hook. Stamatis ducked under it nicely. Stamatis is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range. Stamatis throws a head kick that misses. Thrawn tries to counter by closing the distance. Stamatis scores with a decent looking hook. Thrawn misses with a lunging right hand
and Stamatis counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Thrawn walks straight into a right hand from Stamatis - that's dropped him! Stamatis jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Thrawn from any more punishment! Thrawn complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Athan Stamatis! Athan Stamatis decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
