Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brian Jones! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Azogo Theiles! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Seu Braga and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Theiles closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Jones did well to prevent Theiles getting side control. Jones flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Theiles missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Theiles thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Theiles wants to free his trapped foot but Jones is holding on for dear life with his legs. Jones wants to control but Theiles is keeping busy and won't allow it. Jones is trying to stand back up but Theiles is controlling him
Jones tries to roll over but Theiles keeps him under control. Jones is trying to maintain the position but Theiles is very close to passing his half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Theiles throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Theiles tries to pass the half guard into mount. Jones knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Jones keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Theiles wants to control but Jones is keeping him busy.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Theiles throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Jones was covering up waiting for the punch and Theiles finishes the takedown easily into guard. Theiles throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Theiles throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Jones works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Jones working a defensive guard here.
Theiles stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Jones throws up his legs and catches Theiles in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Theiles tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Jones! That came out of nowhere!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Brian Jones!
