Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Lucius Hodge! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matheus Mattos! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, John Mangel and Hugh Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mattos stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Mattos wants it to stay on the feet. Hodge misses with a takedown attempt - Mattos sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Mattos looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it. Mattos instigates a clinch. Hodge could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Mattos stalling in the clinch.
Hodge drags the fight down to the ground.
Hodge is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Mattos throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Mattos has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mattos is pushing down on Hodge's leg trying to pass to half guard. Hodge is fighting to maintain full guard but Mattos has managed to sneak the leg through. Mattos wants to pass the guard but Hodge is defending well. Mattos blocks the strikes from Hodge.
Mattos is looking for a kimura here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mattos passes into side control, despite Hodge's attempt to control the position.
Mattos sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Hodge is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Hodge knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mattos on the ground. Hodge wants to get back to his feet. Mattos tries to score with some ground and pound. Hodge controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Mattos is trying to get an arm triangle but Hodge is defending well. Hodge can't do much from the bottom here. Hodge dodges the ground and pound from Mattos.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hodge is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Mattos has just dragged him back down to the mat. Mattos works to advance to full mount. Hodge defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Mattos scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Hodge?
Hodge is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes. Hodge tries to reverse the position but Mattos maintains control. Hodge tries to lock up and control but Mattos gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Hodge takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Mattos looking for a guillotine from mount but Hodge is having none of it. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Mattos lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Hodge is looking to improve his position but Mattos isn't that keen on the idea. Hodge taking shots to the head. Hodge might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mattos with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Hodge can't escape the position.
Mattos working away from the top, dropping strikes. Hodge is desperately trying to improve his position but Mattos has a good base and remains in mount. Hodge wants to hold on but Mattos pushes him away. Mattos is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Hodge is rocked! Hodge takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Mattos's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.
