PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Clay Rawls (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeffrey Lui (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jeffrey Lui was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Clay Rawls!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jeffrey Lui!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Elvis Blanc and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lui misses with a looping left.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Lui jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Rawls on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.

Lui fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Rawls sprawls well initially but Lui persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Well, if Lui is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Rawls is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Lui's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Lui's back!

Rawls is trying to stick to Lui's back but Lui is turning into Rawls. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Rawls's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Lui.

Rawls tries to get to full guard but Lui has control of the leg.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Rawls moves away from the strike by Lui.
Lui misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Lui shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rawls pinned against the cage. Rawls gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Lui throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Rawls landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.

Rawls lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Lui or not.
Rawls is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Lui pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Rawls wants to get back to striking at distance but Lui won't allow it.
Rawls changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Lui fights it off and pushes away nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Clay Rawls. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Lui takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Rawls jabs Lui right on the nose. Lui blinks but takes it well.
Rawls shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Lui rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Rawls moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Lui lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Rawls backwards.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Rawls.
Rawls drops down looking for an ankle pick but Lui pulls his leg out and moves away.
Lui tries to clinch there but Rawls circles away.
Rawls slips a jab and a cross from Lui.
Rawls throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Lui's waist but Lui gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Rawls off to one side.
Lui looks to land a right hand but Rawls moved out of range.
Rawls tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

A head kick misses from Rawls.
Lui scores with a jab to the jaw.
Rawls tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Lui paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Rawls closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Lui to the mat! Lui manages to get full guard.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Clay Rawls will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Lui checks a leg kick.
Lui drops Rawls with a left and a right! Oh, Rawls is hurt - Lui dives into side control looking to finish!


Rawls is rocked!
Rawls gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Oh Rawls is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Lui is thwarting Rawls's attempts to control the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rawls makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Rawls.
Lui seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Rawls bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Rawls is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Jeffrey Lui showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Lui lunges at Rawls with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Rawls's hand.
Lui fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Rawls tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Rawls has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Rawls throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Lui wants to control but Rawls postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lui stops Rawls from passing to mount.

Rawls thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Rawls tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Lui fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Rawls on the side of the head.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lui throws an overhand right that lands on Rawls's shoulder, as Rawls tries to avoid the shot.
Lui misses with a double jab.
Lui lands with an overhand left.
A combination from Lui does no damage.
Rawls tries to clinch but Lui moves away

and Lui counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Rawls makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Rawls.
Rawls is trying to control the position but Lui postures up.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rawls is on top in guard.

Rawls drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Lui dives on top into guard.

Rawls controls Lui momentarily but Lui frees himself.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rawls is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Rawls lands a nice shot that snaps Lui's head back.
Lui fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
The crowd cheers as Rawls lands an impressive looking overhand right. Lui doesn't seem phased though.

Rawls closes the distance and clinches.
Rawls misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Rawls lands a right hand.
Rawls throws a knee to the head but misses.
Lui tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Rawls smiles and moves away.
Clay Rawls has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jeffrey Lui.

and Lui counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Lui.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rawls goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

Lui breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Lui is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Rawls pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Rawls drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Jeffrey Lui.
I think Lui has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
