PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ray Griffith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Buck (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ray Griffith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Johnny Buck!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Cecil Peabody and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Buck shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Griffith napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Griffith is looking for a sweep.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Buck is looking to take a break and control but Griffith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Griffith is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Griffith really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Buck throws a strike aimed at the side of Griffith's head but Griffith avoids it well.
Griffith is looking for a sweep.

Buck decides to stand back up. Buck steps back and let's Griffith get back to his feet.

Buck moves into the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Griffith pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Buck dives in and scores a takedown into Griffith's guard.
Buck trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Griffith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Griffith is taking a breather. Buck says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Griffith prevents Buck from improving his position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Buck can do anything to dispel that myth.

Griffith stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Buck to get to his feet.

Buck gets a takedown into half guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Buck blocks the strikes from Griffith.

Griffith is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Buck pulls his head out easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Griffith landing a few short strikes.
Griffith is looking for a sweep. Buck is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Buck really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Griffith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Griffith throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Griffith is not content to let Buck control the position.
Griffith flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Buck stops Griffith from getting back to his feet.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Buck shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Griffith tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Buck seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Griffith does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Buck tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Griffith is not content to let Buck control the position.
Griffith throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Buck is just content to waste time from the top position. Griffith takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Buck wants to control from the top but Griffith keeps moving.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Buck stands up and waves to Griffith to follow him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Griffith misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Griffith.
Griffith sets himself, and Buck steps forward looking for the clinch! Griffith avoids it this time.

Buck closes the distance and clinches.

Griffith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Buck throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
A counter left hand to the body from Griffith misses its target.

Buck feints and as Griffith raises his hands in defense, Buck changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Buck wants to control from the top but Griffith keeps moving.
Griffith throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Griffith will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Buck avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Griffith keeping moving, preventing Buck from controlling successfully.
Griffith bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Buck's guard.

Griffith controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Buck looking to control but Griffith passes into half guard.
Griffith looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Buck with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Griffith is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Buck!

Griffith avoids the attempt from Buck to control.

Buck has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Buck tries to buck Griffith off but he can't manage it.

Griffith takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Buck tries to hold on but Griffith pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Griffith moves into the clinch.

Buck has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Griffith clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Griffith staying busy and making it hard for Buck to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Griffith breaks Buck's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Griffith stops Buck from standing up.
Buck wants to sweep here but Griffith controlling him for the moment.
Griffith controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Griffith will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Griffith's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Buck is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Griffith is controlling him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Buck throws his legs up looking for a submission but Griffith uses it to pass to side control.

Griffith stands up.

Buck clinches with his opponent.

Griffith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Griffith fails to land the takedown.

Buck gets in close and instigates a clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Griffith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Buck shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Griffith's guard.

Griffith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Buck gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Buck stays in close to Griffith's body and controls the position.
Griffith keeping moving, preventing Buck from controlling successfully.
Griffith is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Buck wanted to stand there but Griffith had control of the position.

Griffith lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Johnny Buck.
I think Buck has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
