PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Angel Toney (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Mead (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Toney might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Korn - Twisted Transistor. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 11 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Angel Toney!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Gary Mead!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Igor Prikhodko and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mead swinging wildly here.
Mead throws a right hand that Toney ducks under and follows up with a left that Toney also avoids with ease.
Toney appears to be looking for a big counter.
Toney throws a hook to the side of Mead's head but Mead sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Mead tries to bum rush Toney with a series of wild strikes but Toney uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Toney misses the shot to the body.
Mead steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Toney.
Mead uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Toney.
Toney misses with a jab, cross combination.
Mead is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Mead misses with a double jab
and Toney counters with a straight right hand.
Toney looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Toney tries to sprawl but Mead drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Mead throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Toney slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Toney tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Mead working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Toney's head.
Toney looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Mead puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Toney is looking for a sweep. Mead is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

My spies in The Fortress inform me that Mead has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Mead wants to work for an arm triangle but Toney is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Toney is staying active underneath Mead, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Toney wants to improve his position but Mead is controlling well.

Toney sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Mead distracts Toney with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Mead trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Mead working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mead keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Toney's head.
Mead lands a couple of digs.
Toney wants to sweep here but Mead controlling him for the moment.
Toney manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mead manages to get himself to full guard.

Toney makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Toney wants to stand and escape but instead Mead has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Mead is looking to work some ground and pound but Toney has wrist control.
Toney has momentary wrist control but Mead slips an elbow through the middle.
Toney wants to sweep but no luck.
Mead chips away with some ground and pound.
Mead connects with a couple of short punches.
Toney avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Toney tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Mead scoring with punches to the head and body.
Toney wants to hit a switch here but Mead passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Toney there!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Mead postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Toney looks a forlorn figure.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gary Mead dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Toney scores with a sloppy right hand. Mead should have avoided that one.
Mead has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Toney fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Toney looks to land a combination but Mead avoids it well.
Mead uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Toney misses with an uppercut. Mead saw that one coming.

Mead changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Toney looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Toney regains half guard.
Toney gets back to full guard.
Mead throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Toney is looking to sweep but instead, Mead has passed into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Toney regains full guard. Nicely done.
Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!
Toney looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Mead lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Toney wants to stand up but Mead is controlling him.
Mead trying to control the position from guard on top but Toney is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gary Mead has got the better of the ground game so far.

Toney pushes a forearm under Mead's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Mead is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

During a confident post fight interview, Angel Toney thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
