The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Ryoma Takatsuka and Paul Gruel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Van Gaal cracks Smith with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Smith looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
A combination from Smith does no damage.
Van Gaal jabs Smith right on the nose. Smith blinks but takes it well.

As Van Gaal looks to move away, Smith throws a big counter combo bu Van Gaal just gets out of the way.
Van Gaal shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Smith eats them both and turns towards Van Gaal to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
It looks like Antony Smith has been cut.
Smith throws a right and a left that Van Gaal avoids nicely.
Van Gaal misses with a jab, cross combination.
Smith was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Van Gaal misses with a series of wild punches.
Smith is looking for a counter combo.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Van Gaal throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Smith counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Smith.
Van Gaal wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Smith has him pressed against the cage.
Smith successfully pulls guard.
Smith has control of Van Gaal's left arm, preventing Van Gaal from doing any damage.

Van Gaal tries to stand but Smith is controlling from the bottom.
Van Gaal wants to stand and escape but instead Smith has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Smith prevents Van Gaal from getting back to his feet.
Smith missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Van Gaal is wriggling around but Smith manages to pass to half guard.
Van Gaal manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Smith keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Van Gaal wants to break free but Smith has control.
Smith jumps guard.
Van Gaal stops Smith from standing up.
Van Gaal trying to stand up but can't free himself from Smith's guard.

Smith controlling the position.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Van Gaal scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Smith doesn't seem bothered though.
Van Gaal scores with a one two! Smith had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Van Gaal avoids a punch combination nicely.
Van Gaal unleashes a big counter combination but Smith bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Van Gaal lands with a nice combination. Smith backs away looking to recover.
Cholo Van Gaal is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Van Gaal scores to the head and body with a nice combination!

Van Gaal's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Van Gaal duly obliges.
Smith is rocked!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Van Gaal avoids the head kick by Smith.
Oh Smith is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Smith get stunned by a cross and takes another one on the button. Smith stumbles backwards and tries to bounce back off the cage but Van Gaal runs in and jumps on him with a leaping lead hook that puts him out! Wow, that was highlight reel stuff! Awesome finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:15 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Cholo Van Gaal!
