PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kabal Labak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Merridew (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Kabal Labak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jack Merridew!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Roger Salmon and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Labak loads up on a big right hand but Merridew slips the punch.
Merridew connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Labak momentarily.


It looks like Kabal Labak has been cut.
Labak misses with a straight left.
Merridew takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Labak missing with a left hand there. Merridew was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Merridew looks to land a right hand but Labak moved out of range.
Merridew pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Labak tries to counter with a takedown but Merridew is quick to defend against it.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Merridew enables Labak to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Merridew manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Labak is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Labak is in close to Merridew's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Merridew preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Labak's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Labak has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Labak is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Labak is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Merridew can do anything to dispel that myth.

Labak is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Labak controls from within his opponent's guard.
Labak throwing strikes but missing.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Merridew has momentary wrist control but Labak slips an elbow through the middle.
Labak passes into half guard.

Labak is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Merridew has managed to free his arm - good work.
Merridew wants to improve his position but Labak is controlling well.
Labak is controlling the pace.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Labak lands a nice short elbow.
Merridew is looking to get back to full guard here but Labak has managed to pass to side control instead.
Merridew takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Labak postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Merridew is trying to improve his position.
Merridew on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Labak taking a break here but Merridew is having none of it and regains half guard.
Labak stalling.

Labak seems to be looking for submissions.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Labak is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Labak closes this distance looking for a takedown but Merridew circles away.

A little jabbing left from Merridew on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Merridew swings and misses with a hook to the body.
The fighters circling - Merridew throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Labak feinted with a counter takedown.

Labak shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Merridew manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Labak throws a strike but Merridew rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Labak is working hard here to advance position.
Merridew wants to pass the guard but Labak is keeping the position.
Labak is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Merridew throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Labak works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Merridew wants to control from the top but Labak keeps moving.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Labak wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

and Merridew makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Labak is really struggling to find his range with his punches. Merridew's reach advantage is clearly causing him problems.
Merridew scores with the left hand. Labak knows he should have avoided that one.

Labak looks to land a right hand but Merridew moved out of range.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Labak moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Labak takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Labak throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Merridew tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Labak is in Merridew's guard.
Kabal Labak overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Merridew looking for a sweep. Not yet Merridew, not yet.

Labak thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Labak controlling from the top position.

A close second round but Jack Merridew will probably get the nod - 10:9.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Merridew is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Labak uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Merridew.

Merridew smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Labak looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Merridew misses with a hook. Labak ducked under it nicely.
Labak takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Labak scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Merridew really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Labak. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Merridew is trying to improve his position.
Merridew wants to control but Labak postures up.
Labak tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Labak working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Labak wants to lay and pray for a moment but Merridew keeps working.
Labak looking to control but instead Merridew has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Merridew is not content to let Labak control the position.
Labak is nestled in close to Merridew, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Labak tries to pass the half guard into mount. Merridew knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Labak with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Merridew is in trouble now - Labak has advanced to mount!
Labak tries to control but Merridew wriggling away.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Labak with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
