Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mirko Liddell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chief Bull! The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Russell Pearce and Jonathan Paton.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bull gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Liddell wants a takedown.
Bull breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Liddell. Liddell avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Liddell looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mirko Liddell. That's going to take a lot out of him. Bull tries to clinch but Liddell moves out of range. Liddell drops down looking for a counter takedown but Bull sprawls and moves away. Liddell shoots in and gets a takedown into Bull's guard. Liddell postures up in Bull's guard and throws a big left but Bull blocks it. Liddell is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Bull is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Bull has escaped and now he's on top!
Liddell looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bull trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Bull got a little sloppy there for a moment and Liddell has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Bull has managed to get both his arms back between Liddell's legs - danger averted. Liddell escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Bull gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Bull trying to control the position from guard on top but Liddell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Liddell has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Bull is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Liddell. Bull wants to stand but Liddell has his arm trapped.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Liddell is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Bull is one step ahead and moves to full mount! Liddell is looking to get to half guard. Bull takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Liddell is trying desperately to improve position. Bull trying to control but Liddell is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Liddell working to try and regain half guard.
Bull looking to control but Liddell is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Bull working for a guillotine from mount but Liddell is in no mood to give up. Bull goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Liddell is on top in guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bull is trying to control the position but Liddell postures up. Liddell postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Liddell postures up and lands a big shot to Bull's brow. Bull is looking to stand up but Liddell isn't so interested in that idea. Bull looking for a sweep. Not yet Bull, not yet. Bull is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Liddell is aware though and is defending well. Bull working a defensive guard here.
Bull wants to get back to his feet but Liddell is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Liddell throwing strikes from guard but Bull blocks nicely. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Mirko Liddell will probably get the nod. That's time! Back to the action!
Bull tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Liddell swivels and escapes. Bull shoots in looking for a takedown but Liddell manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Bull's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Liddell shoots in but Bull avoids the takedown attempt easily. Liddell closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Bull to the mat! Bull manages to get full guard. Liddell lands a couple of elbows. Liddell postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Bull is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Liddell, into his guard. Bull trying to control but Liddell is working from the bottom. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Liddell bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Bull's guard.
Liddell postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Bull is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Liddell, into his guard.
Liddell looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Bull passes into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Liddell is looking to improve his position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bull lands with a punch from half guard. Liddell makes his way to full guard, as Bull worked for a kimura.
Bull pushes down on Liddell's leg and manages to get into half guard. Bull is trying to control the action in half guard but Liddell is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Bull thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Liddell's head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bull is looking to take a break and control but Liddell is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Mirko Liddell overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Bull is looking to stall in half guard but Liddell is in no mood to hang around. He's locked up a Kimura from the bottom and has used it to sweep! He's held on to the kimura and is looking to finish here... will he get it... YES! Bull taps out and the crowd goes crazy! Great finish!
