PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mees Metsast (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nelly Haynes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Haynes has chosen Nelly - The Champ as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Nelly Haynes was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mees Metsast!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nelly Haynes!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Colin Fray and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Metsast tries to land a body kick

and Haynes counters with a takedown into side control.
Haynes taking a break here but Metsast is having none of it and regains half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Haynes is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Metsast trying to control from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Haynes wants to free his trapped foot but Metsast is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Haynes is trying to control the action in half guard but Metsast is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Haynes throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Metsast is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Last Dragon MMA, so we'll see if he gets out of it.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Haynes is controlling the pace.
Metsast is refusing to be controlled, as Haynes sits in half guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Metsast gets back to full guard.
Haynes looking to sit in guard and control but Metsast gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Haynes looking for a guillotine here but Metsast defends easily.
Metsast throwing strikes but missing.

Haynes looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Haynes keeping moving, preventing Metsast from controlling successfully.
Metsast is fighting to break Haynes's control of his arms but Haynes is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Haynes might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Metsast haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Metsast misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Haynes.
Haynes tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Haynes fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Metsast sprawls well initially but Haynes persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Metsast holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Metsast wants to control but Haynes is keeping busy.
Haynes throwing shots but Metsast is blocking nicely.
My spies in Evolve Fight Team inform me that Haynes has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Metsast knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Haynes on the ground.
Haynes thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Metsast's head.

Haynes tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Mees Metsast is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Metsast throws a head kick that misses.
Haynes dodges the punch combination from Metsast.
And Haynes tries to counter it with a takedown but Metsast pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Haynes is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Metsast's shoulder. That is not cool.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Haynes tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Metsast is trying to get back to half guard.

Haynes tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Haynes has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Metsast is not content to let Haynes control the position.
The ground and pound from Haynes seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Nelly Haynes has got the better of the ground game so far.
Metsast dodges the ground and pound from Haynes.

Haynes thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Haynes looking to control but instead Metsast has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.

Haynes working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Haynes swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Metsast is now in Haynes's guard. A big mistake from Haynes there, giving up the dominant position!

Nelly Haynes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Metsast pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Haynes shoots for a takedown but Metsast saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
A big left from Metsast misses.
Metsast throws a lazy right hand but Haynes sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Metsast scores with a head kick. Haynes tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Haynes shoots in looking for a takedown. Metsast tries to sprawl out of it but Haynes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Metsast manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Metsast is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Haynes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Metsast misses with a head kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Metsast swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Haynes darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Haynes controlling the action here.
Metsast taking some punishment here, with Haynes in his half guard.
Haynes not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Haynes is looking for a kimura here.
Metsast regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Haynes.

Haynes has gone for a leg lock! Metsast slips out almost immediately though and dives into Haynes's guard.

Haynes is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Haynes has his foot on Metsast's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Metsast works his way back into a safe position though.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Haynes is adopting a defensive guard.
Haynes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Nelly Haynes is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
A chopping leg kick lands by Metsast.

Metsast throws a lazy body kick

and Haynes counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Haynes throws an elbow that misses. Metsast uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Haynes's guard. Nice move by Metsast!

Mees Metsast has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Haynes bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Metsast's guard.


And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mees Metsast.
I think Haynes has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
