PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Maxwell Rubin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Geoff Sanburg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sanburg has chosen Black Sabbath - War Pigs as his entrance music. Geoff Sanburg is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Maxwell Rubin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Geoff Sanburg!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Ryoma Takatsuka and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sanburg throws a low kick but Rubin avoids it.
Sanburg attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Rubin throws a body punch but Sanburg moves out of range.
Sanburg drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Rubin defends it well.
Rubin connects with a body shot.
Sanburg tries to land a front kick but Rubin steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Sanburg throws a front kick aimed at Rubin's knee but Rubin avoids it well.

Rubin closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Rubin has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.

Sanburg tries to buck Rubin off but Rubin is having none of it.

Sanburg tries to bench press Rubin off him but Rubin keeps the position.
Sanburg can't do much from the bottom here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rubin tries to advance to mount but Sanburg denies him.
Sanburg takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

Rubin moves into full mount!
Rubin is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Sanburg can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Rubin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sanburg regains half guard.
Sanburg is looking for a sweep. Rubin is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Rubin scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Rubin working over Sanburg with some ground and pound. Sanburg looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Sanburg is trying to get back to full guard.
Sanburg moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Maxwell Rubin dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

A little feinted left hand from Rubin on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Rubin is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Sanburg can do to turn this around?
Rubin doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Rubin got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sanburg has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Rubin has managed to get both his arms back between Sanburg's legs - danger averted.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Sanburg is on top in guard.

Rubin is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Sanburg defends well.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rubin is trying to control the position but Sanburg postures up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Sanburg shoots in looking for a takedown. Rubin tries to sprawl out of it but Sanburg keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Rubin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Sanburg appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
Rubin looks to score with a jab to the body but Sanburg is just out of range.
Rubin ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Sanburg moves away.

Sanburg throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Rubin tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sanburg is in Rubin's guard.

That was a close second round but I would say that Maxwell Rubin will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Both fighters circling a little - Sanburg finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Sanburg turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Rubin comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Sanburg dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Rubin. That did some damage!
Rubin takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Sanburg lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Sanburg.

The fight stays on the outside here - Rubin looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

As Sanburg tries to get set, Rubin tries to push him back and clinch up but Sanburg manages to avoid the attempt.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Maxwell Rubin is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Rubin fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Sanburg lands a body shot.

Sanburg flicks out a counter leg kick but Rubin steps away.
Rubin just misses with a punch to the body.
Rubin has a takedown stuffed.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maxwell Rubin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sanburg shoots in but no luck this time.
Rubin appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Rubin is looking to wear down Sanburg with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

I would just about give that final round to Geoff Sanburg.
