3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Tom Cooper! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Fedor Mirinova and Konstantin Menshow.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cooper is looking to score with low kicks. Kowalchuk is looking to counter the offense by Cooper and move into the clinch. The fight stays on the outside here - Cooper looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Kowalchuk is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Cooper. Cooper throws a low kick but Kowalchuk moves out of range easily. Kowalchuk blocks a leg kick. Kowalchuk is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Cooper. Cooper rushes Kowalchuk and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Cooper wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Cooper tries for a takedown. No joy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Cooper misses with a punch on the inside.

Cooper has picked Kowalchuk up - he's going for a ride! Cooper dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. Cooper looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nice strikes from Cooper there. Cooper wants to control but Kowalchuk is keeping him busy. Kowalchuk is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Cooper pulls his head out easily. Cooper thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Kowalchuk actively working from the bottom here. Cooper passes to side control. Sloppy strikes there by Cooper.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cooper is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kowalchuk is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Cooper is chipping away with strikes.
Cooper looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Kowalchuk tries to buck Cooper off but Cooper is having none of it. Cooper taking a breather here. Cooper goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Kowalchuk rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Cooper's guard! Nice work there by Kowalchuk !
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kowalchuk drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Kowalchuk jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kowalchuk is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Kowalchuk thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Cooper wants to sweep but no luck. Cooper is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Kowalchuk is aware though and is defending well. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kowalchuk drops back looking for a leg! Cooper is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Cooper manages to kick Kowalchuk off! Kowalchuk jumps back into Cooper's guard. Kowalchuk thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Cooper looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Kowalchuk postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Cooper is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Kowalchuk , into his guard. Cooper throws a strike but Kowalchuk rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Kowalchuk slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Cooper manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Kowalchuk has hold of Cooper's hands but Cooper slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Tom Cooper dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Cooper moves into the clinch. Cooper wants a takedown.
Cooper wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Cooper looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Cooper has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Cooper tries for a takedown but Kowalchuk manages to get underhooks.

Cooper throws a sloppy strike and Kowalchuk has hooked up an armbar on the loose arm! He's turned and extended fully! Cooper is forced to tap! Great BJJ from Kowalchuk !
