PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jim Hagan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Philip Brooks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jim Hagan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Philip Brooks!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Joseph Jones and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Brooks shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hagan napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Brooks swings around for an armbar but Hagan sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Brooks's guard.
Hagan controls from within his opponent's guard.
Brooks working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Hagan.
Hagan loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Hagan trying to control the position from guard on top but Brooks is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brooks looking for a sweep. Not yet Brooks, not yet.

Brooks has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Hagan is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Brooks stalls.
Hagan wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

A bit of stalling here from Brooks.
Hagan tries to pull guard but Brooks holds him up against the cage and eventually Hagan drops back down to his feet.

Hagan ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Hagan no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hagan keeping moving, preventing Brooks from controlling successfully.
Hagan wants to sweep here but Brooks controlling him for the moment.
Brooks must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Hagan is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Brooks tries to roll over but Hagan keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hagan slows the pace down in half guard.
Brooks is refusing to be controlled, as Hagan sits in half guard.
Brooks really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hagan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Hagan prevents Brooks from improving his position.

Brooks keeps trying to improve his position.
Hagan sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Brooks defending well though.
Hagan landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Brooks regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Hagan.

Brooks is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Brooks is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Hagan trying to control but Brooks is working from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Hagan looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Brooks has managed to clinch.
Hagan tries for a takedown but Brooks manages to get underhooks.

Brooks breaks from the clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Brooks feints and as Hagan raises his hands in defense, Brooks changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Hagan on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hagan tries to get out of the position.
Brooks looking to sit in guard and control but Hagan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Brooks changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Hagan looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Brooks wants to take a breather but Hagan manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Brooks.
Brooks is stalling in the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Brooks has gone for a leg lock! Hagan slips out almost immediately though and dives into Brooks's guard.

Hagan wants to control from the top but Brooks keeps moving.
Brooks has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hagan makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Hagan is fighting to break Brooks's control of his arms but Brooks is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Brooks controls Hagan momentarily but Hagan frees himself.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Hagan is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Brooks wants to sweep but no luck.
Hagan wants to control from the top but Brooks keeps moving.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Brooks has Hagan up against the cage in a clinch.

Hagan pulls guard successfully.
Brooks passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Brooks is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Hagan's shoulder. That is not cool.
Brooks looking to control but instead Hagan has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.

Brooks is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Hagan sees it coming and defends easily.

Brooks decides to return to a standing position.

Brooks gets a clinch.
Hagan is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Brooks pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Hagan is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Brooks gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Hagan regains guard.
Hagan has a closed guard, preventing Brooks from standing up.

Philip Brooks showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Hagan is pushing down on Brooks's leg trying to pass to half guard. Brooks is fighting to maintain full guard but Hagan has managed to sneak the leg through.
Hagan thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Brooks's head.

Hagan thows a huge punch but Brooks dodges it nicely.
Brooks is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Hagan scores with a couple of nice shots.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Brooks tries to kick Hagan off but Hagan keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Brooks wants to get back to full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Brooks lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Hagan backs up against the cage.


It looks like Jim Hagan has been cut.

Hagan gets caught flat footed, as Brooks shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Hagan looking for a sweep. Not yet Hagan, not yet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Brooks looking to sit in guard and control but Hagan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Brooks has his foot on Hagan's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hagan works his way back into a safe position though.

Well Brooks has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
