PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Pops Maellard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roger Little (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Roger Little told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Pops Maellard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Roger Little!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Daniel Franklin and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Little tries to close the distance and clinch but Maellard swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Little doesn't manage to clinch there - Maellard circles away.
Maellard swings widly with a right hand
and Little counters with a left and a right that stings Maellard.
Little misses with a low kick.
Little shoots in for a double leg but Maellard sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Little shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Maellard as he jumps to the side.
A quick step to the side and Maellard tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Little fails with an attempt to clinch.
It looked like Maellard was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Little.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Little tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Little takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Little moves into range and clinches up with Maellard.

Maellard decides to pull guard.
Little wanted to stand there but Maellard had control of the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Little accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Little postures up in Maellard's guard and throws a big left but Maellard blocks it.
Little has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Little is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Little throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Maellard.
Maellard throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Pops Maellard is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Little fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Maellard avoids it really well and circles away.
Pops Maellard has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Roger Little.
Maellard misses with a looping left.

Little has managed to clinch.
Little is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Maellard is defending well for now.
Maellard wants a takedown.
Maellard is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Little pulls guard effortlessly.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Maellard trying to control but Little is working from the bottom.

Little manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Some wild striking there from Little.
Maellard fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Little is out of range.
Little fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Maellard avoids it really well and circles away.
Maellard fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Little looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Maellard is fending him off so far but Little persists. Nope, Maellard circles away and we're back to standing.
Little just misses with a punch to the body.
Little shoots in but Maellard avoids the takedown attempt easily.

and Maellard counters with a nice uppercut.
A slow jab from Maellard misses its intended target.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Maellard scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.

and Maellard makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Roger Little will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
