Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sergio Pettis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Alfred Alfredo Sauce! The judges for this bout are Topper Green, Hugh Johnson and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pettis shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Alfredo Sauce napping and manages to drive through into side control! Pettis thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. A lull in the action here. Pettis tries for a kimura but Alfredo Sauce is defending well. You can see the frustration on Alfredo Sauce's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pettis is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Alfredo Sauce is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Pettis working the ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alfredo Sauce tries to bench press Pettis off him but Pettis keeps the position. Pettis wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Alfredo Sauce, who protects the arm well. Pettis trying to control the position but Alfredo Sauce is working away. Alfredo Sauce is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Pettis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Alfredo Sauce keeps working. Pettis is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Alfredo Sauce tries to buck Pettis off but Pettis is having none of it. Pettis throwing strikes but missing, from side control. Pettis scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Alfredo Sauce to see if he's OK. Pettis trying to control the position but Alfredo Sauce is working away. Pettis is trying to get an arm triangle but Alfredo Sauce is defending well. Alfredo Sauce wants to get back to his feet. Alfredo Sauce gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Alfredo Sauce is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Pettis scores with a couple of nice shots. Pettis works his foot free and advances to mount. Alfredo Sauce is in a horrible position here. Pettis smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Alfredo Sauce really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pettis. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Pettis tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Pettis lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Alfredo Sauce is squirming around, avoiding Pettis's attempts to control the action. Alfredo Sauce is trying to get back to his feet but can't.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pettis wants to take his opponent's back but Alfredo Sauce doesn't allow it. Pettis lands a heavy elbow. Pettis quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Pettis but it's paid off an Alfredo Sauce is forced to tap! Nice work by Pettis.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:39 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Sergio Pettis! Sergio Pettis took to the mic after the fight and begged the organizational hierarchy for a shot at the title.
