PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Walter Melon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alfonso Ruiz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Walter Melon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Alfonso Ruiz!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Dirk Anderson and Michael Johnstone.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruiz dodges the punch combination from Melon.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Ruiz checks a leg kick.
Ruiz has his takedown stuffed
and Melon counters with a left and a right that stings Ruiz.
Ruiz shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Melon as he avoids it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Melon throws a head kick that misses.
Ruiz changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Melon tries to avoid it but Ruiz manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Melon to the ground. Melon escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Melon went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Walter Melon has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alfonso Ruiz.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Melon turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Ruiz stuffs the takedown attempt from Melon. Melon gets slowly back to his feet.
Ruiz with the counter takedown but Melon avoids it easily.
Ruiz looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Melon appears to be looking for a big counter.
Melon throws a jab but it's blocked by Ruiz.
Ruiz tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Ruiz feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Melon looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Melon keeping moving, preventing Ruiz from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Melon had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Ruiz defends it easily.
Ruiz forces his way into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Melon is trying to stand.
Ruiz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Melon keeps working.
Melon tries to roll over but Ruiz keeps him under control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Nice sprawl there from Melon as Ruiz shoots in.
Ruiz has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Melon.
Melon tries to close the distance and clinch but Ruiz swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
A head kick by Melon misses

and Ruiz counters with a single leg into guard. Melon didn't expect that.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ruiz trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Melon knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ruiz on the ground.
Ruiz trying to control the position from guard on top but Melon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Ruiz in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Melon is breathing heavily.
Melon wants to sweep but no luck.
Ruiz throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ruiz would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Ruiz seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Alfonso Ruiz will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Ruiz fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Walter Melon is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Ruiz fails to land the takedown.
Ruiz avoids the head kick by Melon.
Ruiz drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Melon defends it well.
Sloppy strikes from Melon. Those never looked like landing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Melon scores with a leg kick.
Ruiz blocks a head kick by Melon.
Ruiz is looking for the big counter here.

Ruiz shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Melon is trying to defend but Ruiz finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Melon is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Ruiz is working for a submission of some sort.
Melon is trying to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Ruiz thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Ruiz is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Melon!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Ruiz can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Melon is looking to escape.

Melon is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Ruiz locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Melon is forced to tap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Alfonso Ruiz!
