Calypso has chosen Jedi Mind Tricks - Genghis Khan as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the super heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 44 - 22 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Nikolai Kovalenko!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 10 - 0, fighting out of London, Jack Calypso!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Dmitry Maklakov and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kovalenko bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Calypso's head backwards.
Kovalenko throws a jab but it's blocked by Calypso.
Kovalenko throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Nikolai Kovalenko seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A head kick misses from Kovalenko.
Kovalenko missing with a left hand there. Calypso was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Kovalenko throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
And Calypso tries to counter it with a takedown but Kovalenko pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Kovalenko throws a left and a right that both miss

and Calypso counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Kovalenko!
My spies in Warrior MMA and Fitness inform me that Calypso has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Calypso tries to move into full mount but can't pass Kovalenko's legs.
The ground and pound from Calypso seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Calypso lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Kovalenko down.
Kovalenko might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Kovalenko avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Calypso.

Calypso thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Calypso throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Calypso thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kovalenko's head.
We've been hearing good reports from Kovalenko's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Calypso passes the guard and advances to mount!
Calypso throws some wild stikes that Kovalenko manages to avoid easily.
Calypso throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Calypso thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Calypso is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Calypso trying to control but Kovalenko is having none of it.
Kovalenko is looking to improve his position but Calypso isn't that keen on the idea.

Calypso throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Kovalenko because Calypso loaded up on that one.
Calypso pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Calypso sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Calypso looking to finish Kovalenko with some ground and pound. This is bad for Kovalenko!

Oh Kovalenko is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Calypso looking to finish here with some ground and pound. He lands one big shot that has Kovalenko covering up... and two more big strikes land, forcing the referee to step in and put and end to proceedings! This fight is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jack Calypso!
