PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jutta Urpilainen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Urpilainen kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is A Boy Named Sue by Johnny Cash. Jutta Urpilainen has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 10 - 3, fighting out of New York, Jutta Urpilainen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 12 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jake Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Steve Smith and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Urpilainen gets a clinch.

Mendes is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Urpilainen can't fight it off and eventually Mendes manages to take the fight to the floor. Urpilainen looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Urpilainen pulls Mendes in close to his closed guard and prevents Mendes from doing any damage or advancing position.

Urpilainen is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mendes defends well.
Urpilainen trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mendes controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Urpilainen looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mendes is one step ahead there.

Urpilainen is working an open guard so Mendes takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Urpilainen connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Mendes slaps away a takedown attempt from Urpilainen, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Urpilainen bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
You can see the frustration on Mendes's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Mendes dodges the ground and pound from Urpilainen.
Mendes is pushing Urpilainen's head away, looking to escape. Urpilainen manages to hold on to the position though.
Mendes tries to bench press Urpilainen off him but Urpilainen keeps the position.

Urpilainen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Urpilainen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Mendes can't do much from the bottom here.
Urpilainen misses with an attempted head punch from side control.

Urpilainen postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Mendes is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Urpilainen asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Urpilainen is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Mendes is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Mendes wants to control but Urpilainen postures up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Urpilainen wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mendes keeps working.
Mendes is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Urpilainen tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Mendes stands and steps away. Urpilainen gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Mendes avoids a kick to the body.
Urpilainen closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mendes circles away.
Mendes looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

Mendes is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Urpilainen is staying active.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Mendes keeping moving, preventing Urpilainen from controlling successfully.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Mendes throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Mendes rushes Urpilainen and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Mendes has clasped his hands together around Urpilainen's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Jutta Urpilainen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Mendes tries to stand but Urpilainen is controlling his head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mendes stands up and beckons Urpilainen to his feet.
Urpilainen looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Mendes drives through and clinches with Urpilainen against the cage.
Urpilainen changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Mendes fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Urpilainen forces Mendes back against the cage and clinches.

Urpilainen has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Mendes uses from the top position.

Urpilainen working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mendes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Urpilainen is tightening it up a little... Mendes has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Mendes reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Mendes taps out! Nice BJJ there by Urpilainen!
