PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Walter Melon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pettis comes to the cage accompanied by Tum Tum feat. Jim Jones – Showtime. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Anthony Pettis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Walter Melon!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Bart Greer and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pettis shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Melon as he avoids it easily.
Melon is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Melon looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Pettis misses with a takedown attempt
and Melon counters with a good low kick that Pettis was not able to check.
Pettis tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Melon swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Anthony Pettis. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pettis shoots in looking for a takedown but Melon manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Pettis's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Pettis fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Melon steps in looking to counter with the mid kick but it doesn't connect.
Melon has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Pettis shoots in for a takedown but Melon shows good takedown defense.
Melon leaves Pettis with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Melon is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pettis lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Pettis.

Pettis trying to keep a closed guard but Melon is proving a slippery customer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Melon must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Pettis has his foot on Melon's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Melon works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pettis is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Melon defends well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Pettis has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Melon doesn't defend quickly enough and Pettis has managed to lock this one up! Can Melon escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Pettis on a fantastic submission victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:24 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Anthony Pettis!
Anthony Pettis decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
