Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Luiz Kartes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Diego Fernadez! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Fedor Mirinova and Aleksei Zolotukhin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Fernadez throws a series of strikes that have Kartes backpedaling.
It looks like Luiz Kartes has been cut. No joy there for Fernadez, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Kartes is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Kartes is rocked! Kartes pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Kartes throws a sloppy body shot
and Fernadez connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Oh Kartes is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Fernadez shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kartes but Kartes pushes him off and we're back to square one. Kartes throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Fernadez was covering up waiting for the punch and Kartes finishes the takedown easily into guard. Kartes seems to have got his legs back now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Kartes is stalling in the full guard. Kartes connects with a couple of short punches. Kartes sitting in guard, not really doing much.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kartes won't allow Fernadez to sweep him here. Kartes's corner is telling him to maintain position. Kartes with a nice head shot there. Kartes stopping the sweep attempt from Fernadez. Kartes not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Kartes forces his way into half guard. Fernadez is trying to get back to full guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Fernadez can do anything to dispel that myth. Kartes has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kartes working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Fernadez looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Kartes! Submission of the night perhaps?
