PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Darren Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Terrell James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). James comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Numb kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Darren Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Terrell James!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Aafke Stam and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Brown gets a takedown into half guard.
James tries to kick Brown off but Brown keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Brown will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Brown is looking for a kimura but James is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Brown to get the leverage.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Brown wants to work for an arm triangle but James is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Brown really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

James slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if James can do anything to dispel that myth.

James manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Brown manages to get himself to full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Brown is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. James can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



James decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Brown is staying active underneath James, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Brown has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. James is working away from the top position though.
James thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

James not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
James leaves Brown with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
James wants to counter the offense by Brown and move into the clinch position.
Brown has a takedown stuffed.
James shoots in for a double leg but Brown sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

James wants to control but Brown postures up.

Brown is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but James is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

James is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Brown staying calm.
James felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
James is looking for a sweep.

James is letting Brown control him for a moment.
James regains half guard there - taking advantage of Brown's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

Brown looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
James really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Brown. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Brown is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! James is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! James has escaped and now he's on top!


Brown had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. James defends it easily.
James seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

That was a close second round but I would say that Darren Brown will probably get the nod.
That's time! Brown's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Brown shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts James as he jumps to the side.

James throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Brown tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. James is in Brown's guard.

James perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

James is pressing down on Brown's thigh, looking to free his foot. Brown is holding on for now.
Brown is trying to control but can't.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Brown is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of James's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take James's back!

James wants to escape the position.

James is trying to get to his feet but he's left his neck exposed and Brown manages to sink in a rear naked choke! Great counter grappling by Brown!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:11 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Darren Brown!
After the fight, Darren Brown was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
Terrell James was interviewed post fight and said 'He is a tough fighter. But I will come back stronger and defeat him in a rematch!'.
