PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Israel Burt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dmitri Povetkin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Israel Burt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dmitri Povetkin!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Vladimir Khabensky and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Burt shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Povetkin is trying to defend but Burt finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Burt trying to control the pace.
Povetkin tries to roll over but Burt keeps him under control.
Burt knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Povetkin on the ground.
Povetkin wants to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Burt wants to stand but Povetkin has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Povetkin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Burt wants to clinch up but Povetkin keeps it at a distance.
Burt is trying hard to land a takedown here. Povetkin sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Burt scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Burt wants to stand but Povetkin has his arm trapped.
Burt trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
You can see the frustration on Povetkin's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Povetkin is looking for a sweep.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Povetkin is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Povetkin is looking to get back to is feet but Burt passes into side control.
Povetkin wants to control but Burt postures up.
Povetkin tries to bench press Burt off him but Burt keeps the position.

Povetkin moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Povetkin tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Burt drives through and clinches with Povetkin against the cage.

Burt pulls guard.
Povetkin passes into half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Povetkin lands a nice short elbow.
Povetkin throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Burt trying to control but Povetkin postures up.
Burt is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Povetkin is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Well, if Povetkin is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Povetkin throws a body punch but Burt moves out of range.

Povetkin is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Burt is just riding it out for now. Povetkin eventually gives up the hold.
Israel Burt overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Povetkin is trying to control the action in half guard but Burt is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Burt looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Povetkin puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Povetkin perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Burt is looking to control Povetkin's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Burt avoid being mounted?
Burt is trying to stand back up but Povetkin is controlling him
Povetkin wants to control but Burt is keeping him busy.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Povetkin moves into the clinch.

Povetkin has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Burt regains guard immediately.
Burt pulls Povetkin in close to prevent any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Povetkin trying to control but Burt is working from the bottom.
Burt manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Povetkin manages to get himself to full guard.

Povetkin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Burt trying to stand up but can't free himself from Povetkin's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Povetkin has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Burt has passed into side control.
Povetkin is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Burt has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Burt tries to stand but Povetkin controls the position and pulls Burt into his guard.

Dmitri Povetkin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Povetkin drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Povetkin postures up.
Povetkin is pushing down on Burt's leg trying to pass to half guard. Burt is fighting to maintain full guard but Povetkin has managed to sneak the leg through.
Burt really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Burt wants to control but Povetkin is keeping busy.
Povetkin looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Burt holds on tight, trying to prevent any damage.
Burt is not content to let Povetkin control the position.
Povetkin tries to advance to mount but can't.
Burt can't do much from the bottom here.
Burt manages to get back to half guard.

Burt regains full guard. Nicely done.
Povetkin is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Burt has control of Povetkin's left arm, preventing Povetkin from doing any damage.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Povetkin shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Burt manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Burt throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Burt utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Burt looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Burt is trying to keep Povetkin in close.

Povetkin wants to control from the top but Burt keeps moving.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Burt enables Povetkin to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Burt manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Povetkin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Burt wants to stand and escape but Povetkin is having none of it.

Well Povetkin has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
