PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Taisto Murkula (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Freedom (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Murkula comes into the arena with Forever Angel blaring out of the sound system. Freedom has chosen Johnny Freedom as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Taisto Murkula!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 8 - 1, fighting out of New York, Johnny Freedom!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Paul Tew and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Freedom connects with a leg kick. Murkula looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Freedom thuds his right hand into Murkula's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Freedom misses with an uppercut.
Freedom uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Freedom swings and misses with a hook to the body.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Freedom enables Murkula to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Freedom manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Murkula stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Freedom swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Freedom escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Murkula gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Freedom looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Murkula passes into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Murkula wants to lay and pray for a moment but Freedom keeps working.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ground and pound from Murkula.
Murkula has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Murkula with the ground and pound but Freedom uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Murkula advances to half guard.
Murkula tries to pass the half guard into mount. Freedom knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Murkula thows a huge punch but Freedom dodges it nicely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Freedom is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Murkula pulls his head out easily.

Freedom wants to improve his position but Murkula is controlling well.
Murkula lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Murkula is taking a breather. Freedom says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Murkula throwing shots but Freedom is blocking nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Freedom gets back to full guard.
Freedom trying to keep a closed guard but Murkula is proving a slippery customer.

Freedom working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Murkula doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Murkula manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Murkula wants to control from the top but Freedom keeps moving.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Murkula jabs Freedom to the body, keeping him at a distance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Freedom moves out of range as Murkula strikes.
Freedom throws the kick towards the body but Murkula avoids it.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Freedom enables Murkula to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Freedom manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Murkula throws a strike but Freedom rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Freedom wants to control from the top but Murkula keeps moving.
Murkula tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Freedom got a little sloppy there for a moment and Murkula has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Freedom has managed to get both his arms back between Murkula's legs - danger averted.
Freedom looking to pass the guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Freedom trying to control the position from guard on top but Murkula is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Freedom wanted to stand there but Murkula had control of the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Taisto Murkula dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A good leg kick by Murkula.
Murkula shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Freedom eats them both and turns towards Murkula to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Murkula swings for the body but Freedom moves out of range.

Murkula bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Freedom is looking for a sweep.
Murkula working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Check out the look on Murkula's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Murkula wants to control but Freedom is keeping him busy.
Freedom gets back to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Murkula is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Murkula lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Murkula putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
Murkula lands with some strikes.
Freedom is looking to improve his position but Murkula isn't that keen on the idea.
Freedom bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Murkula has his feet on Freedom's thighs here. He's pushed Freedom off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Freedom screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Taisto Murkula!

A relieved looking Taisto Murkula thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
