PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Steve Squirrel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lorenzo Ortiz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Squirrel comes to the cage accompanied by Bio Crisis - Delirio. Ortiz is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Cisco Kid. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Steve Squirrel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lorenzo Ortiz!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ortiz stuffs the takedown attempt from Squirrel. Squirrel gets slowly back to his feet.

Squirrel feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Squirrel in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Squirrel is looking to advance position but Ortiz has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Squirrel regains half guard.
Squirrel has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Squirrel is staying active underneath Ortiz, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
We've been hearing good reports from Squirrel's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Ortiz might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Squirrel haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Squirrel pulls Ortiz in close to his closed guard and prevents Ortiz from doing any damage or advancing position.
Ortiz looking to sit in guard and control but Squirrel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Squirrel postures up and lands a big shot to Ortiz's brow.
Ortiz avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Squirrel is fighting to break Ortiz's control of his arms but Ortiz is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Squirrel wants to control from the top but Ortiz keeps moving.

Squirrel postures up in Ortiz's guard and throws a big left but Ortiz blocks it.

Squirrel stands up over Ortiz, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Squirrel is looking to work some ground and pound but Ortiz has wrist control.
Squirrel throws an elbow that misses. Ortiz uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Squirrel's guard. Nice move by Ortiz!


Squirrel looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Squirrel is trying to control the position but Ortiz postures up.

You can see the frustration on Squirrel's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

The ground and pound from Ortiz seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Ortiz looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Squirrel is avoiding damage well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Squirrel can't do much from the bottom here.
Squirrel manages to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Steve Squirrel will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Ortiz looks like he wants to counter punch here.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Squirrel checks a leg kick.
Squirrel misses with a two punch combination.
Ortiz leaves Squirrel with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Ortiz throws out a counter right but Squirrel avoids it with no problem.
Steve Squirrel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ortiz lands a nice shot to the body.
Squirrel fails with an attempt to clinch.
Squirrel misses with a jab, cross combination.
Squirrel takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Squirrel shoots in for a double leg but Ortiz sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Ortiz now looks to counter with a shot at the body.

Squirrel is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Ortiz pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Ortiz lands a hook that snaps the head of Squirrel backwards.
A nice left hand lands by Squirrel.

Ortiz misses with a hook to the ribs.
Ortiz lands a hook to the side of the head.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Squirrel.
Squirrel misses with a hook from the clinch.

Ortiz escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Ortiz has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Ortiz is looking to land body kicks.
Squirrel wants to clinch up but Ortiz keeps it at a distance.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Ortiz throws a front kick that sends Squirrel stumbling back into the cage.
Ortiz's corner calls for a 1-2. Ortiz obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Ortiz moves into range and connects with a jab.


It looks like Steve Squirrel has been cut.

Ortiz tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Squirrel is able to avoid easily.
Ortiz throws a body kick that misses.
Ortiz drops a shoulder and throws an uppercut that cracks Squirrel right on the button. Squirrel goes down! Ortiz follows him to the mat and finishes the job with more strikes! Ortiz gets the win via TKO!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:16 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Lorenzo Ortiz!
Lorenzo Ortiz decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
