Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, James Hogan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Nasko Melnicata! The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Santiago Holmes and Bart Greer.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Melnicata displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Hogan. Hogan fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Melnicata sprawls well initially but Hogan persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Melnicata is looking to improve his position.
Hogan trying to control from half guard but Melnicata is working away. Hogan is really struggling to control Melnicata but he's trying to hold on to the position. Hogan thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Melnicata's head. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hogan wants to lay and pray for a moment but Melnicata keeps working. Hogan missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hogan seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Melnicata does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Nasko Melnicata seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Hogan shoots in and gets a takedown into Melnicata's guard. Melnicata is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Hogan postures up in Melnicata's guard and throws a big left but Melnicata blocks it. Melnicata seems keen to control Hogan's posture.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hogan tries to free his leg and advance position but Melnicata is retaining full guard. Melnicata tries to land a sweep but no joy. Hogan trying to control the position from guard on top but Melnicata is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Hogan shoots in for a takedown but Melnicata shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Melnicata shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Melnicata showed some decent athleticism there. Melnicata is trying for a kimura here. Hogan looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Melnicata wins by kimura!
