Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rowan Atkinson!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Murray Esson!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Tiny Johnson and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Atkinson defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Esson.

Atkinson scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Atkinson has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Atkinson looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Atkinson seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Esson for as long as he can get away with.
Atkinson is looking to take a break and control but Esson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Atkinson is looking to advance position but Esson won't allow it.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Atkinson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Esson closes the distance and clinches up with Atkinson, looking for a takedown. Esson pushes Atkinson against the cage but Atkinson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Atkinson tries to land a leg kick but Esson saw it coming and moves away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Esson is defended easily by Atkinson.
Rowan Atkinson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Murray Esson.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Esson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Atkinson swivels and escapes.
Atkinson feinted with a counter takedown.
Esson has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Atkinson stuffs the takedown.
Esson shoots for a double leg takedown but Atkinson sprawls well. He's pushed Esson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Esson uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Atkinson.
Esson shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Atkinson defends it nicely.
Atkinson drops down looking for a counter takedown but Esson sprawls and moves away.
Esson shoots for a takedown but Atkinson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Atkinson half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Esson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Atkinson pinned against the cage. Atkinson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Esson shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Atkinson as he jumps to the side.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Esson is defended easily by Atkinson.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Atkinson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Esson was covering up waiting for the punch and Atkinson finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Atkinson passes Esson's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Esson wants to control but Atkinson is keeping busy.
Atkinson keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Esson is not content to let Atkinson control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Atkinson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Atkinson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Esson keeps working.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Esson closes the distance and clinches up with Atkinson, looking for a takedown. Esson pushes Atkinson against the cage but Atkinson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Atkinson keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Atkinson changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

Esson gets a double leg takedown into Atkinson's guard.

Atkinson is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Esson has his hands clasped together but Atkinson extends and breaks Esson's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Atkinson.
