Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Macadam Baird! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Juan Gabaldon! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Don Winkell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gabaldon stuffs the takedown. Gabaldon tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. Baird shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gabaldon pinned against the cage. Gabaldon gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. We've been hearing reports that Baird has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Gabaldon shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Baird manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Gabaldon looking to pass the guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gabaldon advances position into side control! Gabaldon takes a little break here. Baird wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Baird tries to bench press Gabaldon off him but Gabaldon keeps the position. Baird is not content to let Gabaldon control the position. Gabaldon is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Baird gets back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Baird has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gabaldon is working away from the top position though. Gabaldon wants to advance to full mount but Baird doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead. Gabaldon makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Gabaldon pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Baird is keeping the position for now. Baird is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Gabaldon has his hands clasped together but Baird extends and breaks Gabaldon's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Baird.
